to elaborate a bit on that last part...
Friday evening I race out of work
I text Jonathan back and forth
He calls and gives me directions to his house
I get home and get changed and get on the road
I text Eric, because last time I saw him, he gave me his number and said to text him next time converge was coming, and he'd put me on the list
But, this time he doesn't have enough spots. I guess because they're the opener. No biggie.
I get lost, a little
Then I get to Jonathan's house
Inside the walls are painted red
There is junk everywhere (all boys live here)
There is a kid sitting on the coffee table, dressed all in black with a white necktie, straight black hair styled to fall in front of his face, playing guitar hero
"That's Dave. He's coming with us."
There are kids everywhere, actually, all in shirts and ties
"They're having a dinner party."
"Oh! How nice!"
They all seem excited
In the back yard, a gazebo is set up with a table and tablecloth, lit with lots of lights, and a video camera set up
The boys in ties crowd around
"They're all going to drink milk until they puke on each other," Jonathan explains.
"Lets get out of here."
So Dave, Jonathan, and I pile into my car
I give Jonathan the mixtape I made him
I ask Dave what kind of music he likes
"I like a lot of stuff, anything thats good. I have really ecclectic tastes."
I call that bluff
"Oh yeah? Do you like ska?"
"No! I like everything except for ska. Ska shouldn't even be a type of music."
"So, your taste isn't really THAT ecclectic."
"I'm just kidding, I do like ska. mighty mighty bosstones, five iron frenzy. I just say that every time someone asks, because you know if they're asking that they like ska. Then I name drop five iron frenzy, to prove I'm legit."
"HAHAHAHAHAH!"
Also hilarious: That hair in front of his face is EXTENSIONS!!! Apparently Jesse's sister does hair, and she put them in for fun. I'm the first person to have this as my first impression of Dave
"So when you walked in, you thought I was just some emo kid sitting there playing videogames? That's awesome."
We get to the Culture Room and fortunately, the show is not sold out.
I thought if I wore a black teeshirt I would fit in, but that is not the case. This crowd is here to see Mastedon. M-E-T-A-L.
Dave really stands out also. Because he doesn't have a long braided beard, or a mullet.
Our timing was perfect--minutes after we get there, Converge takes the stage.
They play a lot of stuff from You Fail Me, and even some from Jane Doe, and my favourite "Eagles Become Vultures"
And then Jake says, "We do have a new record out. Its called No Heros. We're about to play three songs off it. If you don't like them, don't worry--they're short."
:)
And then Mastedon. At first its hard to get into...I don't really listen to them on a regular basis...but the more I watch how into it the crowd is, the more I get into it. They ARE pretty awesome. And they make great faces and one of the guitarists is wearing a GWAR teeshirt.
And then, when its over
"Want to go to Roxanne's?"
Yes!
Dave and I stand around talking about how awesomely metal the crowd is while Jonathan closes his tab.
And then, dance party!
Roxanne's is the same place I saw Animals of the Arctic and Adult. a few months ago, except now the stage area is closed off and its just a bar and a patio and a dance floor.
Jonathan and Dave know a lot of people. They say hi to this wicked cute little elf girl and she almost dies laughing when she sees Dave's hair.
At first I'm iffy about dancing, but then that cute girl (her name is Amy) takes my hand and pulls me onto the floor and unzips my hoodie and dances with me, and then I'm not iffy about dancing anymore.
And the music is really good.
I dance with Dave and Jonathan, and then the dance floor gets crowded because we started the party, so we take a break.
Outside we run into Jesse and some other kid.
Jesse has to tell me a secret
He pulls me aside
The secret has to do with the dinner party, and he is telling me because Jonathan and Dave will be able to see the video later tonight
The secret is the grossest thing ever:
"Ohay, so we were all puking, all over each other, and then I had to pee, so, I just pulled it out! And peed on everybody! And then someone else started peeing!"
GROSSEST THING EVER!
So we talk and laugh and drink (water for me) and when a good song comes on we head back to the dance floor
Dave gets sleepy and I let him take a nap in my car
I could have danced all night
But, without even announcing a last call, the music turns off and the lights turn on and its time to go
I drive Jonathan and Dave home, give them hugs goodbye and say see you tomorrow, because tomorrow they are throwing a Law Enforcement Themed party at Studio A
