Human Trajectory
A Snake-centric Metal Gear Solid Fanmix by lucia_tanaka
13 tracks and mix art under cut

1. "Pale Horse" - John Vanderslice
let the tyrants pour around with apocalyptic sound
on the charge of iron wheels and the crash of horses' heels
rise like lions after a slumber in
in greatly unknowable numbers
through the blood that must ensue
we are many and they are few

knives are drawn now, let them see
standing tall to say they're free
your strong and simple words
set to wound as sharpened swords
wide as targets, let them be
with their shade to cover me

An introduction to Snake's world.

2. "Munich" - The Editors
people are fragile things, you should know by now
be careful what you put them through
you'll speak when you're spoken to

it breaks when you don't force it
it breaks when you don't try

with one hand you calm me
with one hand I'm steel

Before becoming used to betrayal and the ulterior motives of his commanders, there was Big Boss. The first was the worst of them all.

3. "Everybody's Gone to War" - Nerina Pallot
I've got a friend, he's a pure-bred killing machine
he says he's waited his whole damn life for this
I knew him well when he was seventeen
now he's a man who'll be dead by Christmas

so everyone's going to war
but we don't know what we're fighting for
don't tell me its a worthy cause
no cause could be so worthy

if love is a drug, I guess we're all sober
if hope is a song, I guess it's all over
how to have faith when faith is a lie
I don't want to die

Zanzibarland and a Christmas epiphany. The one-two punch of Gray Fox and Big Boss opens Snake's eyes.

4. "Somewhere a Clock is Ticking" - Snow Patrol
I got this feeling that there's something that I missed
Don't you breathe, don't you breathe
Something happened that I never understood
You can't leave, you can't leave
(I can do most anything to you)

Every second dripping off my fingertips
Wage your war, wage your war
Another soldier says he's not afraid to die
I am scared, I'm so scared
(I can do most anything to you)

In slow motion, the blast is beautiful
Doors slam shut, doors slam shut
A clock is ticking, but it's hidden far away
Safe and sound, safe and sound
(I can do most anything for you)

Retirement ends with Campbell's request for Snake's help at Shadow Moses. For 24 hours, Snake's a weapon again, pointed and fired, a golden bullet.

5. "Once, A Glimpse" - Maximo Park
put away hard to find
I don't remember why I started speaking
a fast track operation
slow exertion over-ridden
unseen, tough to catch
I cant remember why I started drinking

slipping under sliding down
all I need is a certain trigger
the path you take will never make you happy
all I need is a certain spur

I wish that I could say that I don't need you anymore
I heard every word you said and that is all

once a glimpse was all I needed
I don't remember why I had to give you back
I just remember I kept all of your souvenirs
discarded traces of a love I never had
I don't think you're gonna get that early night
I don't think you're gonna get it

Out of all the knives in Shadow Moses, Meryl perhaps cuts Snake open the most. He loved her and lost her in the span of a few months, but the cut doesn't heal and Hal's just salt on the wound. He was David and could never be just Snake again.

6. "Hello (Remix)" - Poe
M.O.D. are you out there?
I can't see your face but you left a trace
on a data back-road that I almost erased
not even God takes this long to get back
so get back
'cause I hit a fork in the road
I lost my way home, cut off from out main line
like a disconnected modem, hello
tap in the code, I'll reach you below
no one should brave the underworld alone

I don't have the password
but the path is chain-linked
so if you've got the time
set up the tone to sync
tap in a code

Hello, hello, hello
hey, are you out there?
how do I reach you?

Philanthropy and teaming up with Otacon. The missions are still dangerous and he's still a weapon, but at least now Snake trusts the man with his hand on the trigger.

7. "Dashboard" - Modest Mouse
well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know
oh, the dashboard melted but we still have the radio
oh, it should've been, could've been worse than you would ever know
well, you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go
oh, it could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know
well, the windshield was broken but I love the fresh air you know

oh! it would've been, could've been worse than it had even gone
well, the car was on blocks, but I was already where I want
(it was impossible, we ran it good, we ran it good)
why should we ever even ever really even get to know?
(it was impossible, we ran it good, we ran it good)
oh, if the world don't like us it'll shake us just like we were a cold
now here we go!

well, we scheme and we scheme but we always blow it
we've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it

The USS Discovery almost kills Philanthropy, just days after its NGO status is awarded. Hal takes it hard. David finds himself the optimistic one of the duo in his own dark way.

8. "Me and the Bean" - Spoon
my eyes are opening again
I see you as you're marching in
I'll bring you cover when you're cold
you'll bring me youth when I grow old

do you remember when you were small
how everybody seemed so tall?
I am your shadow in the dark
I have your blood inside my heart

Shadow Moses, the Discovery, the Big Shell, Sunny, and the beginnings of a family. Allies come and go, killed or lost, but David has Hal, and that's enough to weather any storm.

9. "Arco Arena" - Cake
[instrumental]

Days pass, missions start and end, successes and losses abound. Philanthropy, for a while, is a ceaseless, well-oiled clockwork machine.

10. "One Man's Shame" - William Elliot Whitmore
don't underestimate the spine in a poor man's back
when it's against the wall and his future's black

his chains are rattlin' but his end is close
ain't no hell below and ain't no heaven above
I came for the drinks but I stayed for the love

one man's story is another man's shame
I ain't bound for glory, I'm bound for flames

Solid becomes Old and the end is near. But an old weapon will still fire under the right conditions, and he's just as deadly now as he was then.

11. "No Reply" - Yoko Kanno and Steve Conte
like the perfect ending, it won't be too long
'til everything I've ruined has seen me gone
in time I pray you'll forgive, now you know the man I am
can you forgive me?

this was my life
it never made much sense to me

with every lie that I lived, a part of me would fade
into this empty shadow I've become
and now I feel so numb, I no longer know myself
but I still know you

I call
and there's no reply
you'll never know how much you meant to me
and there's no reply
and there's no reply

It might end with a bang, or maybe a whimper. Who's there to hear it?

12. "Anonanimal" - Andrew Bird
I will become this animal
perfectly adapted to the music halls
I will become this animal
anomalous appendages
a non-animal
anonanimal

For the snake, the weapon, the legend, and the man.

Bonus Track: "So Come Back, I am Waiting" - Okkervil River
(long song; addiction, danger, and sensuality, Snake in an irresistible nutshell)

Obviously a companion piece to Otacon's Binary Astronomy but infinitely harder to do. I was determined to make a Snake mix to go with my Hal mix, but at the time, I had no songs that really fit. Then I heard "Hello" through grey_athena and caught the first two lines of "Everybody's Gone to War" and knew I had to make it work somehow.

A LOT of songs were put on and off the mix repeatedly. I'm still unsure of a few, but overall I hope the flow's decent and the lyrics pin-point enough to work for Snake. I'll totally admit that "Anonanimal" is the most self-indulgent of the tracklist, but I thought of Snake as soon as I heard it, AND IT'S MY MIX, SO NYAH. :childish:

That's about it. Snake's a pain in the ass, I can't make a mix without Spoon, Snow Patrol, and Andrew Bird, and Athena is awesome.

Mix art was found all over the place, including here, here, here.

Hope ya'll enjoy.

Oh, and I had a lot of trouble editing the metadata for this one. I lack iTunes and Winamp, so apologies if there's a mistake or if the album art comes up weird. D8
