I told my girl Chris I'd do a big "Vividcon is a Fannish Christmas" post after I'd gone through the vids.
The Vid Everyone Has Seen:
Handlebars (DW)
There's a reason everyone is talking about this video. It is probably this year's VVC best. The theme for the year was "fuck you" and this is, to me, a fuck you to the Doctor. This vid may start all happy and cheerful, but you'll notice something seems ever so slightly off.... Hold onto that. It gets better/worse. If this doesn't flip the way you look at the Doctor, you obviously need to watch it again. I know it shook me up.
For the record, I see everyone pointing out they're favorite parts. Mine in "my cause is noble, my power is pure". Because even as you're being told how horrible the Doctor can be.... him holding out his hand like that, drowned in light? Makes me want to be okay with him, even if it's just for a second.
The Vid That Reminded Me How Totally Awesome Sgt. Nick Angel Is:
Welcome to the Jungle (Hot Fuzz)
Who else could make stopping a shoplifter seem totally fucking sweet? If you liked the movie, you're gonna love the vid. If you didn't see the movie, you'll want to after this, because it is actually even cooler than this makes it seem. Warning tho, the vidder left in the most graituitous death in the movie, the Spire Death as I call it. I flinched at that bit, but everything else was 110% and the song choice was rockin'.
Hey, a Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Vid!:
Use It (KKBB)
I don't get the narrative of the vid... I think it's just an overview vid. It's nice and well cut.... Nothing ambitious, but, hey, KKBB! I'm not picky!
The Vid That's Making Me Start to Find Blood Sexy:
I Am the Drug (Dexter)
Major spoilers for S2, which I hadn't seen, but it revolves are the idea of how seductive Dexter finds his little murder habit.
The Vid That is Almost Over The Top With It's Glamness:
I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor (LoM/A2A)
You know, a lot of my favorite vids are to Life on Mars. Maybe I should, ya know, watch the show someday... Anyway. Gene is awesome. He has UST with everyone. He shoots a plane of glass and then walks through the window. It is all very quickly edited by the vidder who I would argue has the best control of motion in fandom. It's ridiculously fashionable and catchy.
The Vid That Reminds You Just How Gay Alan and Denny Are, Because Sometimes We Forget:
Little Less Conversation (Boston Legal)
I actually forgot just how... metrosexual Alan was. He's just a total stereotype. But he and Denny are made of awesome.
WHY DOES THIS EXIST? AND HOW COME IT ACTUALLY WORKS?:
Pour Some Sugar On Me (dS)
If I have to actually convince you to download a due South vid done to "Pour Some Sugar On Me", there is something wrong with you.
The Vid That's Gonna Make You Uncomfortable:
White America (Multi)
Keep in mind the challenge theme this year was "Fuck you". Well, this video is a "fuck you" to everyone in fandom who allows pretty to distract them from the important equality issues of television (and I'm in the camp of folks who sees this as not at all about race as much as it's about all inequality; I find the vid title misleading). This vid was submitted anonymously and it's really easy to see why. I wouldn't want my name on it.
The Vid That's Gonna Make You Feel Even More Uncomfortable:
How Much is That Geisha in the Window (FF)
.... I don't think I can ever watch this vid again. It hurts to watch. The vidder's voice over at the very end made me flinch so hard my stomach still hurts from it. If you watched Firefly, you need to watch this. It's gonna hurt you, but you have to do it anyway.
Two Vids That Didn't Premiere at This Year's VVC But I Fucking Love Them Anyway:
Snakes on a Plane (HP) and
Sell Sell Sell (Dexter)
So, "Snakes on a Plane" is from the /07 VVC and, here's the part that threw me: It's not a joke vid. I mean, you think of the song, you think camp and lolwtf and such, but this is a very well-edited vid that takes the song seriously and.... it really works. And I find that impressive.
"Sell Sell Sell" is everything I've always wanted in a Dexter vid. Because of it, I will never have to make one. This is really spectacular and has a wheel-like motion to it I love. The summary is apt as well: "Dexter Morgan, the world's greatest actor."
