im looking for a young adult book from the 90's
it was set in Australia, the main characters were a brother and sister who were given a quest - to take a artifact (a jewels cross i think) to safety.
along the way they were challanged by 3 people from the past - a woman and 2 men, all transported convicts.
in one scene they don't realise there are 3 people after them , and hitch a lift on a dusty trail. The brother notices that the driver's shirt is sticking to him oddly in the heat and works out the man must be an enimy from the past as his back is covered with scars from being hit with a lash as punishment.
they eventually escape and deliver the artifact to an Aboriginal man in the outback and everythign reverts to normal as it was the power of the cross that had draw the convicts close
