Who: Everyone who wants to come to Xion's birthday party! What: ... Xion's birthday party! When: November 20th, late afternoon Where: Seventh Heaven Summary: Our dear poppet is now 17 (3) years old! LET'S CELEBRATE Rating: Poppet-G
[This was a horrible idea. The worst idea ever. She shouldn't be here, it'll probably be horrible for both of them. It was Xion's birthday, why was she doing this?
But she's still here. Luke's words are a little hazy, given that it was nearly a month ago, and most of that month was spent at the Malnosso. But... it was the mask, the mask not Xion, and she felt so bad being scared of her for something that hadn't been her fault. Even though the fear was still sort of there, though less intense after a month removed and with new things to fear in its place. When she'd checked through the journal to see what had happened while she was gone, and seen Luke's second notice the day before she got back... Well, she didn't know when else she might see her... ...
... this is still a horrible idea.
She's got a card that's more of a note in her hand that she'll probably drop by the gift table, then play wallflower for a while (against her wont at a party like this) before heading out, unless someone stops her.]
[Luke is the one who stops her, actually. Not by blocking her way or anything, but by a call of her name, and with a hand on her shoulder. When she looks at him, he gives her shoulder a little squeeze before he pulls his hand away, and there's a smile on his face that seems both happy and supportive.]
[Lindsay glances away at the gratitude, not sure what to say. Still not sure how to feel. Everything was still just this mixed up mess of emotions. All the same, she is happy and a little relieved to see him, though it doesn't show much given her current mood.
She wraps her arms around herself, nodding at the floor.]
It must've been pretty hard to come here. [He lets his hand return to his side, though that smile stays in place.] So I'm glad you could. I think it shows that you're pretty brave.
[At Luke's words, Lindsay stiffens and, and her eyes widen. After a few moments of blinking, she looks up in surprise. Her? Brave?
No. No, she's not brave. Not at all. Not here, not back on Earth, not on Otherworld... Not really. Did Luke forget why she was here? She was here because she'd been so scared she'd hurt someone else... Like she had back in Otherworld, though it'd been differently there... her fear keeping her from acting, and her inaction forcing someone else to act, to keep her safe at their own expense...
[Luke frowns a little at that, and his smile fades. That behavior is... kind of familiar. How he'd deny anything good about himself... He's sure it isn't for the same reason. But it hurts to see someone else feeling that way.]
... Maybe you weren't brave before. But it takes a lot to do something like you just did. So... I think you do have some, deep down.
[Sounds almost something like Cass would say. Like she even had said, the first time Lindsay'd gone back to school, after coming home from Otherworld - shortly before arriving in Luceti.
Damn she wished Cass was here...
She blinks a few times - her eyes might have looked a little overbright, if Luke is observant - before glancing up him.]
[... God, he's reminding her so much of Cass right now it's not even funny - if anything it's almost painful. Sometimes she'd do this kind of thing... Say things that just... that helped. That didn't just feel like a false attempt to cheer them up. She'd seen it maybe once or twice, with the others too. But Cass had been doing it for her her whole life, those times when she needed it most.
She doesn't say anything. Instead she turns and Luke may suddenly find her arms wrapped around him as she hugs him and buries her face in his jacket. She doesn't cry, but... being able to cling to someone like this is comforting.]
[ Seeing Lindsay is the reason Xion stops smiling for the first time since walking in the door. In fact, very startled, she just freezes in place, staring at the other girl.
Painfully aware others will catch on if she shows how upset she suddenly feels, she keeps her expression very stoic, and hesitantly approaches. ]
[Thankfully Xion was one of the people Lindsay was keeping an eye out for - Xion taking her by surprise probably would not have been good for either of them at this point, not to mention she'd... kind of come to talk to her. Sort of.
As much as she's tried to prepare for this, she can't stop her shoulders from stiffening a little and her head ducking down. It's instinctive, and she feels horrible the moment it happens, but... there's not nearly the sense of the uncontrolled panic that was there the first time they'd run into each other. Instead there was some not-quite-fully stifled fear yes, but nervousness and worry too, and the frown on her face is more... guilty than anything.]
Hey. [...] I-I left you a note. I'm not sure you saw it.
[She waves her hand lamely over at the gift table.]
[ .... she turns her head, glancing back at the gifts table, then looks at Lindsay again. Xion folds her arms over her chest, more a defensive gesture than anything, and shakes her head. ] No, I ... I wasn't going to check the table until after the party.
[Lindsay bites her lip. The letter would've explained some things for her. Now she has to do it herself. She... she isn't sure if she can but, she can try.]
I- [swallow. You can do this. It's not that hard.] I'm sorry.

It... [She swallows. This is where it gets really hard.
For a moment it's like she's not looking at anything, and her right hand drifts up and touches her own face. That's where she'd felt it - the weight of the mask... From there the same hand drifts down to around her heart, where her fingers tighten a little. That's where she'd felt it - where it'd ached and felt so hollow, after her magic had been pulled out of her. She couldn't do anything to stop either. Everything had been so out of control, and she'd been so helpless...
That's what was scary. That's why she was afraid, even now.
It would be so easy if she could just say this. If she could just explain. But... she can't. She can't even begin to fumble with the words it'd take to explain what had happened, and certainly not here, in a room full of people on Xion's birthday of all things

He won't point it out, though. Instead, he smiles again, and nods.]
I do. I think today, you found enough of that bravery in you to come here. And I really wanted to thank you for it.
