Mac-trap! (okay, last edit, I swear ;;) pugilistinpink November 19 2011, 00:50:07 UTC
A quiet, peaceful morning.

Mac’s worn shoes sank into mounds of soft snow, the air seared his throat and his lungs, misting silver as he breathed out. He had started jogging at a light, easy pace, as always, and once his body quit whining and accepted the fact that he wasn't going to curl in bed and throw on a blanket anytime soon, he had felt a sort of weightlessness and tireless determination take hold of him. He pretended he was trying to keep up with Doc's cycling - and gazing forward, he drove himself onwards, harder and faster, lactic acid burning in his muscles...

And then, all at once, his focused trance shattered.

"Whoa, shii- -!!"

The world flipped upside-down in a sickening blur of colour and he was suddenly lifted high off the ground, suspended from a tree branch by a length of rope around his foot. His heart hammered dizzyingly hard in his chest.

Well, crap.

His body swayed gently from side to side, accompanied by the creeeeeeaking of… something. Either the rope or the branch, he figured - and he sure hoped to God ( ... )

"Is this part of your training, lad?"

FANTASTIC---yet another trap sprung to no helpful purpose. Jack pauses beneath the short-statured boxer, rather enjoying the graceful swinging motion of the man tied to the tree.

Blinking with wide eyes, he attempted to make sense of the woods upside-down, inevitably wincing from the effort after moment; his skull still throbbed from the sudden rush of blood to his head.

If there was anything Mac was certain of, it was that he couldn’t stay like this forever - or rather, that he couldn’t simply wait and pray someone would just happen to come along and lend a hand before his butt froze off, if such a thing were a possible. Or wait for the Malnosso to collect him, if that were the case. The latter sent an ugly frisson through him, threatening to turn his spine to water.

In a passing moment’s regret, he wished he hadn’t left his jacket at home; sure, its bulkiness would have weighed him down, also causing him overheat and sweat heavily within five minutes of vigorous jogging, but he clearly wasn’t capable of running while dangling from a tree.

Fortunately, there was something he could do, he realized, with a sudden and rare flash of genius. Just short of attempting his escape, however, an unexpected voice ( ... )

Wow.....someone who spends time in the woods does that? Edward Cullen hasn't returned, has he?

"Aye, it's one of my traps!" Jack seemed a bit put out by the whole thing after the initial amusement had passed. He needed to bring his women a turkey! And so far, all he was finding was...people. People who had NO BUSINESS WALKING IN THE WOODS TODAY. Forget the teddy bears' picnic, this is a SERIOUS reason not to be out.

"What mean you by springing it? It's meant for turkeys!"

A wave of relief swept over him and he shut his eyes briefly, breathing a sigh. Better that this trap belonged to a pirate of questionable trustworthiness than to a powerful, soulless force and their droids ( ... )

"You could just ask for help, you know. I'm not that much of a monster."

Jack could simply untie the rope from the nearby tree and lower the other man carefully to the ground, but Mac didn't need to know that yet.

"When's the big match scheduled for, eh?"

“Think I can reach it. Maybe. Jus’ gotta try a lil' harder." After a moment, he added, not without a tinge of annoyance, "I wasn’t sure you was gonna help ‘cause you’s jus’ kind a’ watchin’ me.”

He tugged at his sweater in an ineffectual attempt at keeping warm. At least his tank underneath was fitted and didn’t ride up.

"We can talk more when I ain't upside down."

"Right---hold tight, lad. I'll have you down." Mac's of a size that it wouldn't be that hard to lower him to the ground, and Jack did his best to do this as carefully as possible. Gripping the rope with all of his strength, he eased the trapped man to the forest floor.

Sweet, sweet ground; he couldn’t remember a time when he had felt more grateful for touching down and feeling its solid support beneath him.

After brushing snow off himself, he sat up with a low, irrepressible moan, meaning to loosen the loop of rope from around his ankle. But his plan had to be temporarily put on hold when his hand shot up, pressing hard against his aching skull. “Geez…” He winced. “Got up too fast.”

He leaned far to one side as if to lay back dizzily in the snow, but he propped himself up on an elbow and kept his head bowed, waiting for the angry pulsing to subside.

"Thanks. ...For gettin' me down." He murmured, sometime in the middle of recovering.

"When you've been hanging about for a while, it's best not to get straight to your feet again," the pirate informed him sagely. Jack leaned against a tree and began coiling up the rope, waiting for Mac to recover.

"I'm beginning to despair of ever finding a turkey in these parts."

"Didn't know Luceti had any turkeys..." He raised his head tentatively, offering Jack a look between pain and puzzlement. "Ain't seen any while I been joggin', that's f'sure... but I guess there's got t'be somethin' with all them people talkin' 'bout having Thanksgivin' parties."

"Well why would a JOGGING MAN see a turkey? You need to be stealthy!" Jack finished up his coil and looped it over his shoulder. "Besides, turkeys are the sorts of birds that will watch you very carefully from the shadows. You likely didn't even realize it at the time, mate."

At Jack’s description, Mac cracked a grin, letting out a breathy chuckle.
“Y’know, y’makin’ these birds sound like ninjas.” He made a tentative effort to rise to his feet, using the trunk of the tree for support. "Whew." He looked about himself, drying his runny nose with the back of his hand. "Well, y'trap worked jus' fine. M'guessin' y'got a whole bunch layin' around, huh?"

If that were indeed the case, he would make his way back to the village as carefully as possible.

"Turkeys, or traps?" Because that distinction was important.

"Traps." He clarified. "I mean, I hope y'do find a turkey an' all for Thanksgivin'." Setting up these snares must have taken a fair bit of time, too; he could appreciate the hard work.

"You got anywhere to go for Thanksgiving Feasting, lad?" Yes, there were traps. Yes, there were MANY traps. Probably better to go jogging on the roads, Mac, and not in the woods.
