As a sinking sense of hopelessness sits in the pit of his stomach like a block of lead, he finds himself blinking sharply to will away the sudden prickling sting of his eyes. Desperately, angrily, he sets his jaw, his fists clenching and unclenching.
He wasn't going to be that little red-eyed kid again, hurrying stumblingly from the schoolyard with his shirt askew and blood dripping down his nose, laughter chasing him all the way home. Running running running, always running.
