In my younger days I spent a lot of time roaming the world. I abdicated my position to my brother, Ozai. I never wanted to be Firelord, and for a time I traveled, because I wanted to learn more about the world. There is wisdom in each of the Four Nations, and we could all learn some lessons from each other.

I've been around a little bit, haha. I'm pretty good at hiding who I am. Most people just see an old man and don't think "FIREBENDER" immediately. Besides, everyone likes to talk about their own culture. But...I'm rambling again...
