The ship was, of course, the first thing she'd investigated out here. Well..in a manner of speaking. Nami doesn't quite have the strength to pull herself up onto a vessel without the use of her legs, but she does revel in swimming around and underneath it, which fairly enough isn't something she's ever really had the chance to do before.

It's only when she tries to hail its captain that she realises it's deserted. Which is puzzling, because wasn't Jack looking forward to this? But then perhaps he forgot something in town and had to go back...

Whatever the reason, she's looking for him along the beach. It's more idle curiosity at this point, because Jack can look after himself. And...well, she's a little bored. So when she finally spots him wading into the surf, Nami vanishes beneath the surface of the ocean and angles towards him through the water.

The water is up to Jack's waist when he spies something coming AT HIM under the water. At first he thinks "shark," but then he notices what looks like waving red hair. Mermaid? Even worse! Jack draws his sword and then thinks the better of it and tries to make a run for it back to the beach. The shore is a ways off, however, and it isn't easy to run when you are up to your midsection in water.

Is he running away from her?

Well, then. That's just too good an opportunity to pass up. Mermaids from the Grand Line are the fastest creature in the ocean; it'll take her all of four seconds to wrap her arms around your waist and tackle you into the surf, Captain Jack Sparrow.

And so Captain Jack Sparrow goes tumbling into the water, cursing the DP and the Malnosso and his luck, and trying to get a good angle on this creature with his sword...except he's left it on the shore. And no dagger, either.

When he can break the surface and get a lungful of air he yells out, "Leggo! Blasted bloody mermaid! Leggo now, I say!"

She surfaces with him, already snickering. "What, really? I thought you'd love to get a hug from me."

And now Jack IS hugging her back--although she will in all likelihood want to peel him off, because when has Nami ever enjoyed being in the arms of Sparrow?

"I do, actually. Nami. 'S you. I haven't been in your arms since that one time out at Cullen House. This is a surprise. And. Mermaid?"

Ask her that question again, Jack. You know. When she's not trying to shove you back under the water.

Under he goes, then comes up sputtering again. This time he is careful not to take hold of Nami or position himself anywhere near her lovely endowments. But he does have to repeat the question, after some of the water is coughed up: "Mermaid?"

Well, as he's behaving himself, Nami relents, gathering up her wet hair and pushing it back past her shoulders again. "Since this morning. The Malnosso's idea of a joke, I guess. I think I got the better end of the deal this time."

And she tilts her head, regarding him thoughtfully. "Visiting someone in town?"

Jack wipes a sopping sleeve against his mouth, looking not at her anymore but on the nameless boat bobbing on the waves in deeper water. When he'd landed with Tia Dalma, he'd thought that the seasickness, the inability to even stand up properly on a ship on the waves, had been a fluke--perhaps a byproduct of flying through the air for such a distance.

It is his intention today to test that theory, but now Nami has made it rather interestingly complicated. He isn't sure of success. Self-doubt is what kept him on the beach for so long, contemplating all the ways he could fail and everything he had ever heard about death penalties. And he also is not sure he wants her to SEE any possible failure, but, if she's a mermaid...there might be no choice of that.

"No...no, I've been...thinking?"

Nami folds her arms and gives Jack a strange look. He's a pirate, and out of all of them he's the only one who's been able to take back to the sea like this. What gives?

...hmm. Then she smiles faintly. "Too lonely out there by yourself?" She's thinking of Buffy, mind you, but that probably does sound awfully like an invitation.

"Nah, not so bad, really. What about yourself? Any other mermaids out here to frolic about with?"

"Actually, yes. Ami's around somewhere. And the village has a whole bunch of different ocean species today... I've seen a couple of seals. Oh, and my doctor is a kraken."

"KRAKEN?! He's a kraken!?"

It is probably only natural that the pirate would fixate on that point. Jack isn't sure what to do next--run for shore again, or swim like hell for the boat and get her out of danger. Finally he chooses the second option. He has worked too hard on building that boat to see her in the arms of a kraken, like the Pearl before her.

"Very glad you aren't lonely, then!" he snaps back at Nami over his shoulder.

For a little bit, all Nami can do is stare at him in amusement as he goes. Pfft. Like a kraken is any trouble for his boat.

...okay, well. Her kraken, anyway.

Then she catches up with ease, circling Jack once before casually drifting at his side. "You'll take forever. Want a lift?"
