[ McCoy can be found in his room and has left the door open as he makes some last minute preparations (which mostly involves looking through his medical kit and checking his phaser) at the foot of his bed. he reaches up to rub his arm, but he was satisfied at making Bil's job more difficult by refusing head to the tunnels by himself. ]

[slaying]

[ the door may be open, but buffy still knocks. ]

[hippocraticly]

[ the doctor doesn't look up at the door, although he does roll his eyes at the knock. ]

[slaying]

You okay? [ her arms are crossed; buffy is (superficially) in major closed-off mode. ] I saw them drag you in just as I was leaving.

[hippocraticly]

Just fine. I love being dragged around against my will.

[slaying]

[ there is a soft cluck of her tongue but she cares not to argue with the dear doctor. ]

Just...they can be rough. I was worried.

[hippocraticly]

Don't be. You should be more worried about yourself.

[ he lifts the phaser and aims it at the opposite wall. if they want him to fight all the Goddamn time, he will this time. ]

[ it makes her frown to see him with that future-gun. guns are bad enough even with they're not high-tech. ]

I usually come through these things just fine. [ she doesn't want to broach the shifters problem and how much of a threat it genuinely poses. ]

[hippocraticly]

[ cutting him out of the bigger picture again, Buffy? he tries not to let it bother him as he grits his teeth and shrugs. fine. ]

[ more like she isn't sure he needs to deal with the bigger picture in his current state. buffy knows what it's like to be a loose cannon. understands the risk. ]

...Which group are you heading in with?

[hippocraticly]

[ it seems like he isn't going to bother to reply, but he finally reveals. ]

I volunteered to go with the defensive group. [ and he doesn't sound enthused about his choice. after all, there's somebody else on a different team he wants -- hell, needs -- to look out for. ]

[slaying]

Sokka's young, but he has a good head on his shoulders. [ there is a small part of her that wonders what it would be like to work more directly with the boy -- but it had not been quite strong enough of an urge to trump the greater use of hitting up the offensive force. ] It's like he's a natural at this kinda stuff.

[hippocraticly]

Yeah. [ kids leading people into battle. why the hell should anything surprise him anymore? ] He sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

It was his birthday yesterday, you know. Some gift.

[hippocraticly]

Well, that's life for you. Celebrate your birthday, get drafted off to war against your will, die and come back to life and everything else that's foul and unholy in life. [ he was so, so embittered. the break from the village had not done the doctor that much good and being drafted had only served to exacerbate these issues. ] What do you want me to say? Go and mollycoddle him if it'll make you feel better.
