[It's been a while since Raine had to last assume a role for an infiltration, and it certainly wasn't to this degree. The last time it worked because she was the only one who could fit into the outfit, after all. A Shift Researcher... and an opportunity to study the machinery in the Malnosso base. Such opportunities didn't come every day--in fact, it was still amazing that it had come at all, for all they had experienced in these Luceti years.

She's primed for duty, wearing the standard red shirt of the Researchers and black leggings that seemed reasonable - and wearing a pair of glasses for decoration, of course. There aren't that many others with red-colored shirts on the fourth floor, but it would only be a temporary location. There were many locations to check, and not enough time to properly familiarize themselves with it. Or many opportunities to discuss it.

After quietly announcing her arrival over the com link, she finds a location to temporarily situate herself in. For the moment, it's about blending in and waiting, with a coffee cup. ... And a magazine that she found sitting around. 'Shifting Today'. It's a shame it doesn't actually seem useful.]

[Giles, on his way to the elevators, stops in at the room Raine is currently occupying. He's been hearing chatter from all the various Malnosso on the floor, and without knowing what's useful he's trying to hear whatever he can]

[He notices Raine on the way to grab some of the coffee, but says nothing]

[Raine notices his presence, but he's lowly security, so acknowledging him verbally is out of the question, at least for now. She calmly turns another page once he gets close enough.]

[Lowly security talking to one of the Shifting techs? Yeah, out of the question. Giles passes by her and heads for the coffee machine.

One he has some he takes a sip, just for the look of the thing...then he grimaces in disgust and drops it in the nearest trash can.

When he speaks, he doesn't sound at all like himself. The accent is completely different]

Damn it, but with all the rushin' about those red shirts have got goin' on, you'd think someone could manage to fix up the coffee.

[... That was beautifully well played, Giles. In appreciation, Raine will quirk an eyebrow at the lowly security toad. And in a very calm, unruffled tone...]

Deal with it.

Oh, s'all right for you to talk. [In return for the unruffled tone, Raine gets a very disdainful smile. Who is Raine to intrude on his griping?] Nah, we're just the ones keeping the dangerous elements away from all the fancy workings. Who says we get the good coffee?

[So not only is he a lowly security toad, he's grumpy and probably hung over]

If you made it yourself, there wouldn't be a problem, now would there?

[She keeps her tone dry, and averts her eyes, checking the clock in the room.]

[He snorts] Right, like I haven't got enough on my soddin' schedule. [He notes her looking at the clock] Got somewhere to be?

I have rounds to make, but my partner is late. Such as it is.

The hours you lot keep, I'm amazed you all can remember your own names sometimes. [He shakes his head and sighs]

Least you get windows up here. Me, I'm stuck in the basements all day. Again. How's that for fair?

It's easier to concentrate when there are less distractions. You should consider yourself lucky.

So says the one who works topside.

Honestly, you lot are worse than the sawbones', and they give me the goddamn creeps.

[Buffy tightens her grip just about perceptively on her clipboard when she notices Raine. She doesn't want to give too much away, but...but perhaps touching base would not be such a bad idea. She whisks by--at first cold and detached--and serves herself a cup of lukewarm and probably substandard coffee. Oh well. The caffeine isn't the point.

Doubling back, she makes as if to serendipitously pause near Raine's table. Buffy clears her throat.] Is this seat taken? [With her clipboard, she gestures to a chair nearby. Her voice is hard. Trying to be unlike herself.]

[... A white lab coat, so some deference is due. But she knows that voice. Still, there's no reason to break roles immediately. Though Buffy's question is still a little too polite. She raises her eyes from the magazine to acknowledge the Scientist.]

No, not currently.

[She sits, then--being sure to smooth out her coat as she does so. The clipboard clatters gently onto the table and, ever a fidgeter, Buffy reaches for the pen slotted into the top of it.]

I was looking for someone from Research. [She remembers what little she has absorbed from being briefed and tries to keep her words nice and sterile. For inspiration, she eyes the magazine's title.] Some of the Shifting...stuff has to be looked into, down on one of the basement floors.

[As she talks, Buffy seems to be scribbling; however, she has actually written out a quick note to her fellow villager: Couldn't see you and not check in. Are you OK? Nod once for yes, twice for no.

She offers Raine a paltry few seconds to read it before casually scratching over the message with her pen.]

[Raine takes a careful pretend sip of that coffee before responding, though she nods once, first, before speaking. After all, not much has happened yet; she still has a person to wait for.]

How large of a problem is it, and which floor? We may be able to spare some time for it.
