[The river south of town is on of Hitsugaya's regular haunts. So he's here by accident. Complete accident and, he swears, if he's called out on it, he'll leave. For once, he's not carrying his sword -- it's a birthday party -- and not wearing the usual shinigami robes.

Gods, it was a bad idea to come down here. (Except it was by accident. Really.) So he'll just weave his way through people, head for the food -- why not? -- and be on his way to a quieter part of the river. But first, he really should at least say hello to Katara. Maybe even seek out this Nami person he's had a couple conversations with, but hasn't seen in person.

Or just leave. Just leaving sounds good, too.]

[Dude, you can not just leave. This is a splash. It is a playful splash with only a very small amount of bending behind it. And it is headed in your direction.]

[Playful splash or not, that's still something headed in his direction. He's not startled and he knows good and well that's Katara, but he's not going to just stand there and let the water hit him. (Even though he'd actually welcome a cool splash of water.) A flick of his wrist puts up a kidou shield, and he gives Katara a raised eyebrow. Try harder next time, Katara.]

[Shield down. He crossed his arms instead.]

Didn't know it was your birthday. [Yes, that translates to hello, how are you?, and happy birthday all at once.]

If you didn't know it was my birthday, then how did you know this party was for me?

[Blink. Oh. Wait. Backpedaling.]

Didn't know until the party was announced. [Sigh. Damn it.] Having a good day? [That would be a slight less ambiguous wish for a happy birthday. He's not going to say the words, okay, Katara?]

[Oh. Well, that makes sense.]

Yeah, it was a surprise to me too - I didn't even know it was my birthday.

And yes! [Smile. Come on, you know you want to jump into the river.] it's a nice day for a swim.

[He blinks at her. She didn't even know...? How does that work? He gives the river a dubious look. Oh, he can swim and swim pretty damned well. He's just not a big fan of people around while he does.]

It is warm enough.

[Paaause. And when politenes fails... time to be blunt.] Are you going to come in, or would you rather grab some cake?

[Isn't he, though? He shakes his head and gestures back toward the table.]

If that's my only choices, I'm taking cake. [He's not swimming in his clothes.]

OK! [She climbs out of the river and bends the water off to lead him over to the table.]

Sanji made two of them, so I know that those are really good. And I haven't tried the one from the bakery yet either, but I've heard that Regal is really good too.

[That was easy. He expected more of a fight about swimming. Or getting waterbended at. Something. He'll take it though. He falls into step beside her.]

I've had a few things from the bakery. Seems all right.
