What they're "protecting" us from is something they're fighting. And we're somehow relevant to their ability to defeat it all. Probably.

But it's not us, it's "people who aren't effected by outside stuff." Plus it looks like Malnosso recruits from within the population of people here if John and Jacob mean anything so they probably are trying to avoid the influence of whatever is out there in general.

Maybe. Though someone I know was affected, and he really doesn't have an affinity towards water save for that he's been around it the majority of his life. He can't really cast any artes or anything.

Though if that's the case, those affected outside the barrier still being affected, why does the barrier keep getting pushed back and Luceti keeps getting bigger?

My theory is they're prepping us with these experiments to get ready to fight the affected on the outside since they can't do it themselves.

Why not? The Malnosso seem to have been around long before they started bringing us in. Who's to say the ones that are affected outside aren't failed experiments they can't control any longer? Maybe we're just Hybrid Model 2.0.
