On the other hand, to some degree he is way more nervous about her damage and her problems than he lets on, but that's mostly because he doesn't want to make her worse or unhappy.

...Dhaos, you give Giles the creeps.

He would say that he has no idea what Grune sees in him, only he is only just starting to accept the idea that Grune sees anything worth seeing in him. He is very well aware that Dhaos does not like him, although at this point he thinks that it must be something he's done as opposed to a general hatred of humanity.

So he enjoys being able to poke at Dhaos without Grune noticing. One day, he will probably come out and ask, "Okay, so what's your problem?" Until then, Dhaos gives him the creeps, and it's in payback for that that Giles is kind of a troll around him. He gets the sense that Dhaos is actually more socially inept than he is, which is an extra bonus and also something he almost pities Dhaos for, especially given that he's caught Grune's eye.

In terms of "people he hopes Buffy decides to settle down with", Riley Finn is at the top of the list thanks to Season 8. But here in Luceti, Giles...has actually caught himself feeling grateful that Buffy is with Jack, rather than running back to Angel, and not just because Angel killed him or that Buffy turns up an utter wreck when she isn't involved with Jack
