After a bit of anxious urging from Tracey, the group finally set out to Professor Oak’s laboratory. Tracey got to meet his idol and Ash handed over the GS Ball; the reason they’d set out to the Orange Islands in the first place. Sadly, Professor Oak was unable to uncover the mysteries of said ball and asked Ash to take it to Johto.
After another few encounters with Team Rocket and a battle against Gary Oak, which Ash lost spectacularly, the group was ready to set out. However, Tracey had decided to stay behind in Pallet Town and become Professor Oak’s assistant. A dream come true, of course. He said his farewells to Ash, Misty and Brock and got to work on looking after the Professor’s Pokemon. By proxy, he would also look after Ash’s old Pokemon, which would be left in the laboratory. In the third Pokemon movie, Tracey had two quick cameos. One was near the start of the movie, discussing Professor Hale’s research with Professor Oak. The second was in the end credits, where he could be seen sweeping the floor of Professor Oak’s lab. In the episode Bulbasaur.. The Ambassador, we got a quick peek into the life at Oak’s laboratory while Ash was in Johto. In this tale, Bulbasaur was permanently sent to Pallet Town to try and keep peace between certain Pokemon groups who couldn’t get along. In the fourth Pokemon movie- Celebi; The Voice of the Forest, which also takes place while the twerp trio is in Johto, Tracey had a little cameo in the end credits. There, he was seen cleaning up the lab and uncovering one of the Professor’s old sketchbooks- undeniable proof that Professor Oak was the boy known as Sammy. During the Johto league, Professor Oak traveled there to cheer for both Ash and Gary, leaving Tracey in the lab by himself. In the episode Gotta Catch Ya Later, Ash returned to Pallet Town by himself, where Professor Oak and Tracey informed him that Gary was “feeling inspired” and had left on a new journey, leaving nearly all his Pokemon behind at the lab. Ash later decided to do the same and set out to Hoenn, taking only Pikachu with him. Tracey agreed with this idea and promised to look after all of Ash’s Pokemon while he was away.
Now, after Ash set out to the Hoenn region, Misty returned to Cerulean city to become the gymleader, while Brock rejoined Ash’s group after a quick stop in Pewter city. This is where the Pokemon Chronicles series started, which held many more stories for Tracey. In Showdown At The Oak Corral, he helped Professor Oak and Mrs. Ketchum stop Butch and Cassidy from stealing Pokemon that were in storage and belonged to other trainers. Another little funfact is that the infamous Magikap salesman stopped by and tried to con Tracey into buying one of his Magikarps- a fact which outraged both Tracey and Professor Oak. Then, in the episode The Blue Badge of Courage, he paid a visit to Cerulean Gym to see if Misty needed any help looking after the Pokemon. When she admitted she was having trouble getting Psyduck to swim, Tracey tried teaching it, only to fail miserably. Shortly after, Sakura, one of the people Misty had met during her Johto travels, dropped by for a gym battle. Sadly, as they were all out of gym badges, the trio had to visit a special artisan for a new batch. Said artisan, Kinso, had twisted his ankle and was unable to make any new Cascade badges. That’s why the trio was forced through rigorous training to make the badges themselves. There was also some badge thievery involved at some point. In the end of the episode, Tracey decides to take Sakura along to Pallet Town, to introduce her to Professor Oak.
