Nothing is known about Tracey’s home, or his family. All that’s known for certain is that he travelled the world as a Pokemon Watcher, observing and studying Pokemon in their natural habitat. He first met Ash and Misty in the episode The Lost Lapras, where he interrupted a battle Ash was about to have with some bullies to make remarks about the Pokemon’s health. He then proceeded to help them get an injured Lapras to the Pokemon Center. Once he found out that Ash and Misty were acquainted with his hero, the renowned Professor Oak, he promptly invited himself along on their journey. Their final destination was Pallet Town, after all. Another reason Tracey decided to travel with them was to help them get Lapras back to his family. Meanwhile, Ash was determined to defeat the four gymleaders of the Orange Crew and participate in the Orange League before returning home.
From that moment on, Tracey acted as a guide as they made their way through the Orange Island archipelago and became a valuable companion. He would offer insight on their locations, as well as the Pokemon they encountered along the way. Of course, he would also help Ash and Misty fend off the notorious Team Rocket. Every episode had a crazy adventure of its own, but I’ll just stick to describing the ones that are most relevant.
Initially, Tracey had only two Pokemon for his own; Marill and Venonat. These two aided him in his Pokemon watching hobby, as Venonat’s radar eyes and Marill’s supersonic hearing made them a perfect tracking team. In the episode Tracey Gets Bugged, he caught an old Scyther. Initially, this was to get it to a Pokemon Center, as it was injured. However, it soon became an addition to Tracey’s team. In the episode The Wacky Watcher, Tracey got to meet another one of his heroes; the famous Pokemon Watcher Dr. Quackenpoker, who was doing research on Magikarp evolution. Tracey aided the man’s research only too eagerly. In the Stun Spore Detour, both Ash and Tracey accidentally inhale a Vileplume’s stun spore, leaving them bedridden for virtually the entire episode while Misty went out to find the cure.
Now, if we were to count the Pokemon 2000 (the second movie) as being canon, Tracey was one of the very few to see the three legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres together as they engaged in combat, disturbing the ‘balance’ of the world. He was also present when Ash, the “Chosen One”, set out with Lugia to calm the three down and return peace to the seas. However, this entire movie is a rather debatable source and if we were to accept it as being true, it means Tracey got to meet Professor Oak before arriving in Pallet Town, which actually contradicts the series. Not to mention that Tracey made no recognition of Professor Oak being in the same scene as him at the end of the movie, which is already very questionable in its own right. There’s other things that make this source contradict canon, of course, but this is the one glaring fault that directly relates to Tracey.
In the episodes Hello Pummelo and Enter The Dragonite, Ash competed in the Orange League by battling Drake, the leader of the Orange Crew. This encounter ended victoriously when Ash defeated all six of Drake’s Pokemon, including the legendary Dragonite. In the episode Viva Las Lapras, the young Lapras from the start of the series was finally released to rejoin its family, completing another one of the group’s original goals. They returned to Pallet Town by ferry and arrived successfully in the episode A Tent Situation. There, they made a quick stop at Ash’s house and met up with Brock. When questioning why he wasn’t still with Professor Ivy, Brock would constantly get depressed at the sound of her name and claim that he didn’t want to talk about it. This led Misty to believe that he’d been dumped.
