Time Period: Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch. End of the Tea Party.

History: There are some who seek to find happiness for the entirety of their lives.

Beatrice is one of those people. Someone who sacrificed the right to have a happy ending to meet someone she loved. Someone who knew the consequences of being an Endless Witch when they asked to have power.

Yet, despite this tragic fate that seems to be set for her--

The only thing she desires is that said happiness.

Beatrice was not the name she had in the past- rather, the name Beatrice is granted to those who gain the powers of an Endless Witch. This type of witch has the power to revive something over and over again - whether it’s a human, or an item. However, the powers aren’t something that all witches can gain easily.

There is one scene where Virgilia (Beatrice’s teacher) repairs a broken vase with her powers, but shortly afterwards, the vase breaks again. When Beatrice asks her why, Virgilia replies that ‘it seems that I could not make the vase forget its own fate. It was only repaired for a short while.’

Despite that Beatrice only gained that name when she became a witch; her real name has not been revealed yet.

Her past is only hinted in the story so far. However, from what we can gather in the story, Virgilia, one of the past Beatrice’s, had taught her magic - and instead of using the Endless Magic to bring people happiness like it was supposed to, Beatrice used that magic during her eventual game for the sake of killing others; not realizing what the worth of that life she would throw away so easily was.

Throughout the course of Umineko’s story, you see her mentioned again and again as the ‘witch of the forest’. Kinzo Ushiromiya - the head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family - tells his children to never wander into the forest, because the of the witch living inside of the forest. In actuality, a human was living inside of a hidden mansion located deep within Rokkenjima’s forest - a place where Beatrice resided when she was human.

Rokkenjima is a small island located in Japan - Kizno owns it as his own private home with his four children. It’s one of the only settings of the story.

However, the Beatrice living inside of the mansion at the time did not have her powers; rather, she didn’t even know who she was.

She was a mere human.

According to Beatrice, Kinzo had summoned her using black magic, and even though he had little magic flowing through his veins, she answered his summoning even though it had been such a slim chance. It was revealed that because of Beatrice, he had been able to receive so much gold - but at the price of his own soul. Upon meeting with the witch, he had fallen in love with her, despite the fact that he married someone else. However, it is said that it was an arranged marriage, and he might not have loved his wife to begin with.

The next time he had summoned her he sealed her inside of a human body, and locked her up inside of a mansion. Though the rumor was that Beatrice had been his lover, the story has not officially clarified that. Though, he did court her over and over again, Beatrice never agreed to take his hand in marriage. As a result of this, Kinzo locked her inside of the mansion and told the young woman that she would not be released until she agreed to marry him.

In order to prevent Beatrice from escaping the residence, Kinzo told her that the wolves in the forest would surely get to her.

So, she never left on her own.

She would often ask Kinzo and the servants that worked there who she was, but would never receive an answer.

Years later, Rosa (one of Kinzo’s children) had wandered in the woods after a fight with her family, and had somehow found the hidden mansion. It was there that she found Beatrice.
