Character

Name: Kaywinnet Lee "Kaylee" Frye
Fandom: Firefly/Serenity
Gender: Female
Age: Not canonically established, but for purposes of Luceti we'll call her 25.
Time Period: Post-series, pre-Serenity film.
Wing Color: Yellow.
History: Kaylee at the Firefly wiki gives a good overview of the canonical information for her.
Personality: Very little is known about Kaylee's background from canon, except that she has been fixing things for most of her life and her father had some kind of repair shop on her home planet. Kaylee grew up raised by her father, her mother having died when she was quite young, and she has two older brothers, so she's used to being the only girl in pretty much any situation. So on one hand, she has no problem being in the company of men, and in some ways she might be described as a "tomboy". On the other hand, however, she has a fascination with anything traditionally "feminine" or "girly" and she enjoys any opportunity to dress up like a fancy lady. Inara is a particular focus of this fascination, her elegance and glamorous career are constant sources of curiosity for Kaylee - Inara is the big sister Kaylee never had, doing her hair, talking about boys, giving her advice in love, that sort of thing. Kaylee comes across as very sweet, maybe more than a little naive, and she's used to being everyone's "little sister" - the entire crew is incredibly protective of her, and as such she's been spared some of the uglier things that happen in the course of their travels (though not all - she's been shot, been in firefights, seen the result of her captain and pilot being tortured, etc.). She's not entirely ignorant of the ways of the 'verse, though - for all her sweetness, Kaylee is an incredibly sensual woman - she savors the sweet taste of strawberries, and likes having sex in engine rooms (and isn't afraid to talk about it, either). In fact, she's rather disdainful of anyone who displays puritanical attitudes - she doesn't understand why someone would get all uptight about something they want, something that is perfectly natural, ordinary, and most important, fun.

Strengths: On a technical level, her main strength lies in her ability to make things work, even things that seem to be irreperably broken. It's something she was born with, rather than something she was taught - she can look at an engine and just know how it ought to work, the best way to make it go. In short, she's a prodigy, and she'll always be most comfortable in an engine room, specifically Serenity's engine room. That is her heart's home, and it's the heart of the ship. It's where she belongs.

Emotionally, her biggest strength is her innate goodness. Her crew is her family, and to a large extent (while Mal is the leader and inspiration), Kaylee is the emotional glue that holds them together - everyone loves her, and she loves them all completely, unconditionally. Kaylee always tries to see the good in people, lending her an air of innocence that, to some extent, does tend to bring out the good in others. Even Jayne, an amoral hired gun who is brutish, vulgar, and violent, has a soft spot in his heart for Kaylee.

Physically, she's pretty agile, having spent her entire life from the time she could walk climbing in, out, and around engines, though she's far from being able to hold her own in a fight - her agility is more likely to serve her well in dodging and running away.

Weaknesses: Kaylee's naivete could very well land her in trouble. The protective instincts she arouses in her crew are well-founded - if someone was truly evil enough to want to hurt Kaylee, they would easily succeed without trouble if other members of the crew weren't around to intervene. Once, she even got caught in the cross-fire - literally - and nearly lost her life to a stray gunshot. Kaylee is not a fighter. Hand her a gun and she hardly knows which end to point at the other guy, and in a high-pressure situation she becomes frightened and mostly unable to do anything.

When something does go wrong with Serenity's engine, and Kaylee can't fix it (which is very rare, but has been known to happen), Kaylee becomes incredibly self-critical and it's difficult to convince her she's not at fault for being unable to fix things.

Furthermore, for all her sweetness, Kaylee can have a rough edge at times. She grew up in a house full of men, she's used to doing work that is traditionally considered "men's work", and she can sometimes be disdainful of people with "soft hands", so to speak, or those with puritanical attitudes - she's very down-to-earth and expects others to be as well. She doesn't really understand anything beyond the social milieu in which she was born and raised.

Finally, while she knows pretty much everything there is to know about engines and machinery, she has no formal training (aside from what her Pa taught her back home) and her education in general is severely lacking - she has maybe the equivalent of a high school diploma, and that's it.

First Person: [She's begun to talk to herself, because she's alone in a forest, and it's cold, and talking is the best way to keep her spirits up.] Death ain't exactly all it's cracked up to be, if that's what this is. Though the wings're a nice color. It don't really make sense, though, because if I'm dead, I shouldn't be this cold, right? Or sore, I feel almost as sore as that time I got shot. So I can't be dead, if I was dead I'd be nice and comfy somewhere.

Still, they wouldn't just leave me here. They'd never do that, and I can't find Serenity. My girl needs me, I hope she's around here somewhere. It's cold. What sorta planet is this?

Third Person: Her face was not one much given to frowns, and anyone who had known her for more than a day would say that Kaylee frowning was a sure sign of real trouble - yet here she was, frowning as though her life depended on it. Maybe it even did.

She moved in a slouchy, gangly kind of way, clearly not accustomed to the sort of dress she now found herself in. She'd be much more comfortable in a set of loose-fitting coveralls and a smear of engine grease on her nose. She was sort of muttering to herself as she walked through the trees, mostly in an attempt to keep herself calm and break the silence around her. Once in a while, she would call out a name - "Cap'n?" "Zoe?" "'Nara?" or "Simon?".

What had happened to her friends? Her ship? Her Serenity? Something awful, something terrible, must've happened for her to be out here, in some strange place, all by her lonesome, with no ship or crew in sight, and a strange pair of wings painfully grafted to her back. Couldn't be reavers, surely, or she'd just be dead, and far as she knew, the Alliance wouldn't do something as stupid as stick a pair of wings on anyone, though who knows what sort of things they'd done to River in that place Simon talked about?

If not reavers, or feds, then who? And if she didn't find someplace warm soon, she wasn't likely to live long enough to find out. "It's cold," she muttered, continuing her search.

The planet was at least terraformed, which meant there'd be people somewhere, she just had to find them. Of course - a river. It was the same on every planet, every moon. People built their towns around a water source. If she followed the river, eventually she would find the people. If she could make it that far.
