History, Continued:

The heroes of that conflict decided to form an alliance to protect the Earth from threats, both extra-terrestrial and terrestrial. This group was the Justice League. Batman, however, did not openly join the organization, having preferred to work solo all of his life. However, he had funded the launching of the Watchtower, the League’s base of operations, and the development of the Javelin-7, and additionally decided to remain on-call if the League members needed him.

So far, Batman’s participation within the Justice League has been rather limited. He assisted when trouble reared its head in Atlantis and helped protect its King, Aquaman. Also, he was instrumental in dismantling the Injustice Gang, a group of supervillains led by Lex Luthor. Though he was captured because of the Joker’s involvement with the gang, Batman worked to sabotage the Injustice Gang. He played them against each other and convinced the Ultra-Humanite to betray them. Even when rescue came, Batman revealed he could’ve escaped at any time, but instead found it better to just sabotage them from where he was. Later, when Wonder Woman returned to her homeland and found everyone turned to stone, Batman gathered information about Felix Faust, a former professor turned warlock. He went to Themiscarya along with several other League members to rescue the Amazons, but in part his presence was responsible for getting Wonder Woman banished from her island.

It is shortly after this event that Batman was taken from his world…

Personality: Batman’s personality is best put as serious, stoic, dedicated, and unflinching. The death of his parents caused young Bruce to dedicate his life to fighting crime, and this was something he took with the utmost seriousness. A man of extreme persistence and skill, Batman mastered several forms of combat, honed his mind to a sharp edge and pushed himself to the peak of physical conditioning.

A loner at heart, Batman prefers to adventure on his own. Though he has taken on three sidekicks in Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and Barbara Gordon, much of his time crimefighting is spent prowling the Gotham skyline alone. He is a man who is very slow to trust, and is quick to suspect something suspicious. The only person he is shown to trust with absolute faith is his butler, Alfred Pennyworth. However, he has found allies in many others, such as the Robins, Batgirl, Commissioner Gordon, and eventually with the founding members of the Justice League.

Batman’s stoic, serious demeanor is very near impenetrable. Aside from the occasional self-satisfied smirk, he rarely lets off any sort of visible emotion for his opponents to capitalize on. While he frequently appears uncaring, Batman often performs acts of kindness and compassion without expecting thanks in return. Even more, he can extend compassion to his enemies from time to time: most deftly illustrated in his pleas with Two-Face to let him help, or when exposing the wrongs that had been brought upon Dr. Victor Fries.

Personality, Continued

An important aspect of Batman’s character is how he pursues justice in Gotham. Though he seeks to bring down the various criminals and mob syndicates in his city, a vital aspect to his heroism is that he does not pass judgment. He apprehends criminals and turns them over to the police so that the courts may decide what is just. To this end, Batman will never take a life in the course of his duty, and he will never willingly pull a gun on someone. All of his tools and takedowns are strictly non-lethal, nor will he detain a suspect without handing them over to the authorities. He may bend the law to protect it, but he will not take it into his own hands.

A critical aspect to Batman’s personality relates to his secret identity of Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne is seen publicly as a charitable philanthropist socialite while being a competent businessman. Though he is occasionally seen as airheaded or dense by his peers, this is an act. His business policy is very progressive: when Wayne Enterprises was participating in a slash-and-burn operation in the Amazon, Bruce was furious and ordered it shut down regardless of the cost. Moreover, he donates a great deal of money to charitable research and is very hesitant to allow his company to perform weapons research.

But this leaves the dilemma of who is the real person between the two of them, much like the duality between Superman and Clark Kent. However, while at the core Clark Kent is the heart of Superman… the true identity of the Dark Knight is Batman, not Bruce. In the future, Batman was able to determine someone was invading his mind because they kept calling him “Bruce”, which he claimed is not who he thinks of himself as. So Batman, the stoic Caped Crusader of Gotham, is the core personality while Bruce Wayne is a convenient mask he dons when Batman’s presence would be inappropriate.

Strengths: To borrow a phrase from the comics: He’s the goddamn Batman.

Physical: Batman has pushed and trained his body to the limits of human physical strength, agility, durability, and constitution. Needless to say, he’s a master of stealth and infiltration, capable of getting in or out of just about anywhere he wants to with nary a sound. A talented escape artist, Batman studied under the magician Zatara under the pseudonym John Smith. He is capable of escaping straightjackets, handcuffs, and various forms of rope bindings. The only bond Batman is not shown escaping from simply is a heavy chain with a lock. Besides his talent at stealth and escape, Batman has mastered several forms of unarmed combat; the number of styles he knows is unknown. However, he is shown to hold his own in combat even against the various metahumans in the DC Animated Universe, such as Killer Croc.

Many of his other physical strengths come from the gadgets he employs as a crimefighter. His talents with these tools are also phenomenal. His aim with Batarangs and their spiked cousin, the Batstar is exceptional; to the point where he has successfully thrown a batstar into the barrel of a gun that was pointed at him. That said, he uses Batarangs more against soft targets like people because of their nonlethal nature. For methods of locomotion, he usually employs a t-shaped grappling gun. This grappling gun has served him very well throughout his adventures in Gotham and is perhaps his most commonly used crime-fighting tool. The grapple gun features a special feature that is utilized occasionally: the line and hook can be charged with several thousand volts of electricity from a push of a button. Batman has used this to help rip car doors off their hinges and expose Clayface when he was disguised as the Flash. He rarely uses this function of the grapple gun, however. More recently, Batman installed a gliding function into his cape instead of resorting the heavier Batglider.

In Luceti, initially he will be left with only a few things in his utility belt: some batarangs, a few spiked batstars, a couple of vials of antitoxin, a gas mask, basic forensic supplies, his glider cape, and his trusty grapple gun (the electric charge ability still in effect). He is missing his gas grenades (both knockout and standard smoke), explosives (conventional, fragmentation, and flashbang), remote controls for various vehicles, his explosive batarangs, and his tracking and listening bugs.

Mental: For all of his physical prowess, Batman’s true power lies in his mind. Possessing a genius level intellect, an uncanny skill at deduction, and an iron will, he has solved many a crime, and many of Edward Nigma’s most perplexing riddles. He has even managed to impress the several centuries old R’as al Ghul with his cunning and resourcefulness; to the degree that R’as wished Batman to be his heir. In addition to his detective skills, Batman is an expert in many scientific and liberal arts fields, such as chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, and forensics. He’s also well-read in fields of history, sociology, and psychology. Examples of Batman’s skill at the sciences are prevalent throughout his investigations: using hairs to identify suspects, analyzing the components of Scarecrow’s fear toxins, and designing various pieces of his own equipment.

Emotional: Batman is a highly seasoned, stoic detective. He is unflinching in the face of most threats, mundane or metahuman. Very few times has he ever lost his composure in the face of duty, and even when stunned, Batman retains his head. His iron will prevents him from being coerced by various forces. He is utterly immune to Poison Ivy’s seduction pheromones, for example. And perhaps the most important aspect of his emotional strength: while both a realist and a pragmatist, at heart, Batman has flashes of optimism and believes in the inherent goodness of people. Though this side of Batman rarely openly shows, his belief in the American justice system is a vote of confidence to the common individual.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Batman, while the epitome of the “Badass Normal” trope, is still a human being. Sure, he may be in peak condition and can take injuries or punishment better than a normal person. But he is still human, and lives with all the physical drawbacks associated it. In the Animated Series, he suffered temporary blindness from an explosion, been poisoned or gassed several times, suffered concussions, and strained limbs. Though he usually recovers from injuries with great speed, he can still be brought down with lethal weapons.

Mental: …Virtually none. Batman’s mind is shown as virtually unbeatable. When Dr. Destiny enslaved the minds of most of the Justice League, Batman resisted the effects by refusing to sleep. And then, he confronted Dr. Destiny directly, when his mental powers were actually stronger after been awake for three straight days. Dr. Destiny was unable to break into his mind. Short of being incapacitated and then having his mind read, it’s very difficult to crack into the mind of the Dark Knight.

Emotional: Above all, the death of his parents haunts him to this very day. He is worried that his parents would not be proud of what he has chosen to do, as well. Though he never vocalizes these fears, they are usually the very first thing that haunts him when he is under the effect of Scarecrow’s fear toxins. His other demon is his failure to save former Gotham DA Harvey Dent from his fate in becoming the villain Two-Face. Other than these demons occasionally haunting him, Batman has few emotional weaknesses. The only sure way to provoke his wrath is to hurt someone he cares about, or do terrible things to children. The Sewer King’s enslavement of forsaken children was the time Batman came closest to breaking his rule about passing his own judgment over that of the law.

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person: Not knowing how I ended up here is disturbing. Knowing that the people keeping everyone in this village have no idea how we end up here is worse. No one has control of this situation. Not yet. But that won’t stop me. Nothing will stop me from getting back to Gotham.

But what I’ve read in these journals gives me pause. There is plenty of danger here, even if most people are unaware of it. Guess it’s not unlike home in that way. I have already set up here. There are still some supplies I want, but for now what I have in the cave should be sufficient.

…These may not be the people of Gotham, but I’ll do whatever it takes to protect them. And as I look down upon this village in the dead silent of night, unseen by its inhabitants, my path remains as clear as it ever has been.

I will bring fear to the hearts of those who would inflict it on others. I will bring those who break the law and terrorize the innocent to justice. And I will not rest until everyone here is safe and returned home.

I am Batman.

Third Person:

The wind blew through the dead silence, gently tousling the cape of a shrouded figure standing atop Community Housing Six. The village would normally be tough to see at night, but the candles lit in some places throughout town gave him enough to see where everything was.

So far, he had spent the past several days out of sight of the village. Without so much as being detected he was able to recover everything of his and find a temporary spot to rest in an empty room on this building. With plenty of time on his hands, he had spent it researching the inhabitants here through the journals. Though with the more… interesting individuals, he preferred field research. It was nothing more than observation at this point. But it was informative. Before too long he would be ready to announce his presence.

Batman kneeled down at the edge of the building and looked out into the distance. His position gave him the appearance of a gargoyle, stoically standing guard against evil spirits. Though motionless, much ran through his keen mind. Foremost, the existence of Clark Kent here troubled him deeply. If Superman was captured and brought here by the Malnosso, their power might be insurmountable directly. But all powers, even those of the Man of Steel, could be circumvented with the right preparation. Such preparation was made more difficult without the Batcave or much of his equipment, however. Not that it was impossible. Nothing was. Though he hadn’t been able to make a trip out to the barrier yet, but Batman knew that it would be pointless. He knew others had recently attempted it, but nothing came of it. He would like to analyze the energy field directly, but without use of his supercomputer, he wouldn’t be able to deduce just how the barrier was made anyway. For now, that’ll just have to wait.

…He rose to his feet and frowned deeply. It was time to set up a meeting with Clark.
