So on Friday, I went with Katy to this acoustic show at the One Place. It was a bunch of local bands, including
Anarbor, whom I love to bits.
First up were
Out of Reverie. The two boys who played (since it was acoustic, only a few members of each band played) reminded us a lot of Brendon and Ryan, in demeanor as well as looks. They were very good, I enjoyed their set a lot. Also, the lead singer had on a really awesome striped hoodie. Unfortunately, the (young) girls next to me talked a lot, as did the girls next to Katy, which was annoying.
Next was a guy from the duo (I think? I'm not sure) Jacob Taylor. Either that or his name was Jacob Taylor. That's what it said on the flyer, so I have no clue. Anyway, he was pretty awesome. It was very mellow music, and his voice was really unique. It went between that sort of hushed nasality that's so common in indie music and full-out belting that really impressed us. Didn't hurt that he looked like he could be the long-lost third Way brother. I swooned hardcore.
The two bands after that were pretty unremarkable; they were called The Harmless and This Century.
Next was Anarbor! They were pretty much amazing, despite the fact that once again, I've been robbed of the space where I want to be, which is right in front of the lead singer, Slade. Instead I was to the right of one of the guitarists, which meant I was on the far end of all of them. By that point, we were all sitting down on the cement floor, which was fucking freezing, but I had fun anyway.
After Anarbor, we left, because it was cold, and we'd had our fill of listening to unknown music. Outside, we saw Slade sitting and playing guitar with a circle of who we assumed were his friends sitting around him, listening. I stopped to say hi to this dog that someone brought (it might have been his, because he said he'd brought all of their puppies), and that's when he started singing. I was struck by how good he sounded, because you can't always tell; microphones give this nice echoey effect that can improve voices a lot and change their sound completely. He sounded just as good off-mic as on, however, and we would have stayed to listen, but it was cold, and we were afraid of seeming creepy. After we had gotten in the car and were driving back past, we saw a lot more people watching, and I kind of wished we had stayed, but it was freezing, so.
Anyway, it was very fun, and I can't wait to see them again in February!
