Sometimes, Being Your Friend Hurts -- Traverse Town 2nd District [Open/COMPLETE]

Feb 12, 2006 18:14

Traverse Town had changed a lot since he was fourteen. It had lost much of its innocence. The whole world seems to be geared towards fighting the war and defending the people who appeared everyday. It was supposed to only be a way-station, a place for people to learn about the different worlds and then travel to them, but more and more of the ( Read more... )

Yet the 'inevitable' had to wait another day to show its ugly head to the world ( ... )

Sora continued to sit dumbly as he slowly recovered from the cold. The appearance of the stranger in a now familiar (once familiar?) coat stunned him, but his mind was too foggy to really see him. He watched the weapon slice through the Heartless around him, destroying them in a violent but fascinating way.

It took him a moment to register that his left hand was still grasping his shirt and necklace and has the let go he realized he was still on the ground, Keyblade in his right hand and legs bent and open from the fall. It didn't seem to pop into his head that he should stand up though, instead he watched the Heartless around him disappear.

He shuddered, as the last bit of the frozen grip left his heart.

Violent didn't seem to be enough to describe how gruesomely they were mutilated; for a moment even looking like they were actual material beings instead of synthetic creations from the Darkness. But there they were, falling like flies as the figure danced to catch its weapon, only to let it go and begin the cycle all over again.

The act lasted for only a minute, and it almost looked like the very presence of this foreign body was enough for the leftover Heartless to disappear into the depths, no matter how disturbing the Keyblade Master's Light was.

The figure, who didn't bother to take a second glance at the fleeing Heartless, caught the chakram once more before it disappeared into the night, leaving it to just stand there awkwardly leaning back. The open end of its hood slowly twisted over to where the Keyblade Master laid.

It took a step forward. Another step. Another. Wandering. And when it finally reached the young brunet, it swooped down, quietly kneeling itself next to him as if to take a closer examination. The hood tilted ( ... )

Sora stared up at the figure. His blue eyes were wide, drinking in the sight of the way the stranger walked. He felt something like a headache slowly start to invade his skull. The death of the Heartless, despite how horrible it had been, didn't seem to bother him in the slightest. He had seen so many different types of the shadows torn apart by weapons and by magic that he simply had no reaction to the way they turned into smoke and faded away in the air. After all, why should he mourn them? He remembered what it was like to be lost in the darkness. Death was the better option. If that was even the correct term to assign to what happened to the mindless shadows after they blew away with the wind ( ... )

"It's nothing. Time used for helping you is time never wasted." He gazed through his hood to watch Sora stand up warily, getting up himself with practically no problem at all in comparison. His coat billowed at his feet a little, before ceasing movement all together as he bent backwards again.

"... But I have to ask..." The hood twisted once again, back at the brunet's direction as he spoke. His voice, while holding no threatening tone, emphasized a kind of innocent curiosity.

"... Was that the Keyblade I saw in your hands just a moment ago?"

Sora blushed. He couldn't help it and he felt all the more embarrassed because of it. Was he that out of it? That he would react that way to such a simple question that usually made him grin cockily and show off? He felt the heat in his cheeks and just imagined how stupid he looked. A hand went to his forehead, rubbing it slightly and taking the movement to cover up the embarrassing reaction ( ... )

Yet the Keyblade Master's audience didn't seem to be affected at all with how he saw the brunet in his time of need. But there wasn't really much to indicate the lack of surprise on his features due to the hood that he hid himself with.

When Sora imposed the simple question upon him, a gloved hand slowly reached over to pull the hood back, releasing the spiked crimson tresses all over his back and shoulders, like they originally were. Those slanted green eyes, that usually held a world of deprivation like all Nobodies, had been brightened for the Keyblade Master.

Axel licked his lips a little moist them, chewing at the corner of his mouth absent-mindedly.

"Is it okay to? Will it drain any of your energy...?" He pointed out.

Sora grinned widely, exposing white teeth, when the man uncovered his face. There you are, he thought. He was actually pretty good looking, not like Riku, but pretty. The hair was a little flashy, but who was Sora to talk about things like that ( ... )

"You personify it..." Those green eyes blinked, before his thin lips gave a hint of a smirk. It was an odd concept to see your weapon as something entirely human, but warriors from the past had learned to trust the object they used to protect and kill with. Axel could see the bond that could develop between such a thing.

... Though the Keyblade and the Keyblade Master? Maybe it was something a more than looking 'silly."

The shine that coincided with the weapon's appearance reflected on the redhead's eyes, and for a split second the nobody flinched and took a step back. He was a fool if he forgotten how the Keyblade felt when it was brutally rammed into his thin frame those several years ago. Even now, his once calm motions grew into a slight caution, but Axel didn't completely stray away from the Light that hummed from it.

"To think that the fate of everything existing laid in the hands of the one who held the Keyblade," Axel gave a coy smile and lazily dragged his foot along the floor. "Talk about peer pressure at its peak."

Sora was too distracted, or too oblivious, to notice the red-head's change. The feel of the Keyblade in his hands was like the embrace of a good friend. It was something he would never grow old of, despite how often he held the Keyblade.

He was more than just attached to the Keyblade, it defined him. He was the Keyblade Master, maybe he wasn't the intended, but he was what he was and nothing would take that away from him. Nothing. His big blue eyes looked the Keyblade with a friendly shine to them.

With Axel's words Sora looked back up at him. His smile was warm and sincere. "It's not that bad. At least I can do my part."

He meant both of those sentences. Sometimes he might feel a little overwhelmed, but it was worth it to know that he was helping people. That he had a job to do. That he was important. Any hint of the headache was gone by then, the Keyblade seemed to chase all unpleasant feelings away.

When Sora smiled at him, the redhead gave a small nod. It was fascinating to watch someone who he had known personally for four years act exactly the same as when they first met. Even though the situation was a little different on both ends...

Ah, but this was a blank slate for him, wasn't it?

"Living without a purpose is... awful." Axel emphasized this with a twist of his lips, nose wrinkling at the statement. It tasted foul, but also very familiar.

The redhead lifted his hand to rub at his bleeding strands, eyes glancing over to the fountain and glided over to it. Since he was wearing all black his boots blended so well with his coat, looking almost as if he was a spirit floating along listlessly. He readjusted his coat as he sat at the edge, gloved hand reaching over to run itself over the trickling water.

"Do you want to sit?" Axel nodded over to the empty space next to him.

Sora opened his mouth to ask how he would know such a thing. Sora always found comfort in the Keyblade and in being the Keyblade Master. He couldn't imagine living without it. When the stranger walked away, though, Sora couldn't find his voice. There was something that was eerie about the movements, like it was from a dream, or a faint memory of a dream, or even a fading thought of a faint memory of a dream.

The Keyblade disappeared back into his heart, where its light nestled down as it were home. He moved carefully towards the fountain, thought of the fact that it was really the Keyhole, and sat next to the red-haired stranger.

"Do I know you from somewhere?" he finally asked, his voice and face carried an odd quality. The fading thought of a faint memory of a dream left a slight impression on Sora's mind.

He was missing something important.

"Know me...?" Most would have reacted with a hint of nervousness, but Axel was actually quite calm about the whole situation. With his hand still cupped underneath the sprinkling water, he gave Sora a bemused look, looking up at the starry sky seemingly deep in thought.

"It's said that everyone has at least six copies of them existing in the universe," Axel gave a faint smile. "Maybe... you've met one of my doppelgangers."

Out of character, though what could seem like a plausible first impression for Sora, the redhead laughed a little at an added thought.

"Or maybe it's been so long that I've forgotten myself."

Even without any intent to, Axel always found a way to mock.

Axel watched Sora's youthful movements from the corner of his eye, mainly because he was also busy looking up at the stairs with fascination. He listened to the brunet babble out his own thoughts and questions, having to chuckle near the end and finally let his green eyes linger back down to him.

"It's a theory, of course. But a popular one, in fact." The red haired nobody used his free hand to trace small circles on the edge of the fountain. "And maybe in your case... it could very well be true."

But by then his voice became detached, almost as if something that Sora said caused him fall into deep thought as well.

Or maybe he was just biding his time? It wasn't really clear.

Sora nodded vaguely and continued to look upwards for a moment longer. Sometimes he forgot just how big the universe was, and sometimes he felt almost swallowed up by it. He shook his head, riding himself of all the strange thoughts and looked at the stranger again.

Suddenly he realized that he had been acting very rude. This man had saved him a lot of trouble and he hadn't even asked his name.

"Say," he started out, sounding curious. "What's your name anyway? It's kind of weird for you to know who I am and I don't even know your name, don't you think?"
