Investigation -- Hollow Bastion [Open]

There had been rumors of problems with Beast and Belle floating around, and while Aladdin was all-too-curious, he knew from what he'd picked up that it would be best to lay off before getting involved and trying to get the specifics of what was going on. He was concerned, yes, because he thought very well of both of the parties involved, but he was ( Read more... )

Finding something that would not go up in flames was hard. Finding something that wouldn't cause the rest of the gardens to ignite was harder. Yet, with a little poking and proding, Kairi managed to unearth a spanse of brick wall that had been painted over numerous times in the past few years, colors exposed by the chipping and wear of neglect.

In the back parts of the gardens that most did not tread, Kairi had designated this place as the area for her practice. With her concern for Sora and Belle's husband riding in the back of her mind, the mindless indulgence of magic was a nice distraction. Her shoulders had a faint ache that promised soreness tomorrow, her hands were uncomfortably dry from the heat, but she looked proudly at the charred wall. Most of her spells had hit the center of the wall like she had planned to.

Taking a break to catch her breath and rub her shoulders, she sat down against the trunk of a large tree, looking at the wall carefully, as if judging each scortch for some flaw.

At first glance, he had thought the garden was empty. Deserted. Having resigned himself to boredom, he was about to turn tail and leave back to his room when he heard a vague sound of fire, then nothing, and then some heavy breathing. Brow furrowing, he spun back around, looking here and there to determine where the noise was coming from.

He started in one direction, following his ears, and soon happened upon a young girl seated and staring at a very charred wall. He stared at the wall for a moment and Abu made a disapproving noise before he turned back to the girl.

"Did something happen?" he asked, sounding quite concerned.

At this time of night, Kairi had thought as Aladdin did that the garden would be abandoned. She managed a sheepish smile at him before pointing to herself.

"I did," she said softly. "I was practicing magic, I'm sorry if I disturbed you."

Having any fear of her being injured banished by a small explanation, Aladdin let out a sigh of relief. Just exhaustion from too much practicing, it seemed. He'd never been too in tune with magic, though he knew that quite a few other residents in Hollow Bastion were. It seemed this girl was among them, even though he didn't know who she was...

"No, it's fine. I actually came here, hoping someone would be around, 'cause I'm bored..." He looked a little sheepish and shot a grin at her. Without warning, he sat down next to her. Abu examined the girl and chirped approvingly. She seemed nice enough.

Giving a smile to the small, brown creature that chittered at her, Kairi picked up a chestnut from the ground. Seeing that it was relatively clean, she offered it to Abu.

"Yeah, it can get really boring around here." She lifted the nut up in her hand, palm turned up. "Everyone's all work, work, work, it seems."

The monkey made a happy noise and snatched the treat from her, jumping off of Aladdin's shoulder and scattering to a corner to gnaw at the thing. That would be keeping him busy for a while. He certainly approved of the girl.

"I know what you mean," Aladdin replied with a sigh. "And I never have everything to do. Jasmine is busy enough for the both of us, though, being a Princess of Heart and all..."

It was only afterward that he realized she probably had no idea what he was talking about. He startled a little and looked apologetic. "Oh, sorry 'bout that. I'm Aladdin. I'm, err, married to Jasmine-- you know, one of the Princess of Heart." He really didn't want to sound like he was bragging. Because it honestly wasn't a big deal to him.

She watched the creature scamper off into a corner with the nut tucked close to it's chest. She lost the first part of his speech, but a name managed to reach her ears.

"Oh! You're Jasmine's husband? She talks about you so much." She held out her hand. "Pleased to meet you, I'm Kairi." She took a moment to look at her hand and realised it was smudged with soot. Giving an embaressed chuckle, she wiped her hands on the underside of her skirt and held her hand out again.

Aladdin's first thought was some shock at the fact that this girl somehow knew Jasmine. He certainly hadn't been expecting that. His second thought was wondering if Abu was going to crack his teeth on that nut, but he decided he'd leave the animal to his devices. His third thought was registering the name Kairi and realizing he knew it somehow--

"Oh! Sora's... friend, right?" He had to pause for a moment to exert the word "girl" from that sentence, since that was only meant for teasing between him and Sora. He didn't want to offend the girl. "Nice to meet you." Not really minding how dirty her hand was (he'd lived on the street after all), he grasped it and gave it a firm shake.

He was quite friendly, very open and kind, just as Jasmine had described him to her. She returned the shake with just as much vigor.

"Yeah, I'm Sora's... friend." He has paused oddly in the middle of the sentence. Maybe Common wasn't his original language? Pulling her hand away, Kairi leaned her head against the tree, plucking another nut from a low branch. Placing it between the heels of her palms, she squeezed her hands together, the nut gaining a small crack along a side. Enough to pry her fingernails into.

"Who's you friend?" she pointed to the monkey, still in a corner. "I think he's hungry."

The fact that she paused as well made him a bit suspicious, though he figured it may have been simply because she was mimicing the way he had said it. It didn't really matter, though. When it came down to it, Sora's girl status wasn't really his business. And he wasn't about to get involved in any romantic teenage antics. (Though he was barely older than a teen himself...)

"Ahh, his name is Abu. I think he likes you," he said with a nod. Abu liked anyone that gave him food, really. "Nah, he just ate. But he'll take food whenever he can get it. He's sort of used to doing that..." Yeah, they'd had to really scrape for food before.

"Abu?" she said, calling him over and exposing the shelled nut in her hand. "So he likes to mooch off people?" she chuckled in a friendly way. "Sort of reminds me of Sora, he'll demolish anything you put infront of him."

Her heart gave a little twist, the image of blood splurting and bone snapping still bouncing around in her head. But it was okay, Sora had healed himself, he was fine.

He was fine.

"So, you're bored too? Know of anything to do around here?"

The small creature perked up and bounded over at the offer of more food, taking the nut from her and then running back to his place in the corner to work at it yet again. Aladdin just sighed and rolled his eyes. "Yeah, if you're offering it, he'll take it."

Her question was responded to with a shrug. "Not really. I just wander around, see how I can talk to or bother, stuff like that. Explore the castle..." He wasn't sure if mentioning secret passageways was necessarily a good idea, even knowing that the girl was a Princess of Heart.

Nodding in acceptance, Kairi stood up and brushed her skirt off.

"Not much to do except work and study." She looked back over her shoulder, to the wall that seperated the gardens from the village. Her mouth twisted in a strange way that indicated she was thinking.

"I wonder if anything is open tonight?"

Work and study. Not things that sounded very appealing to Aladdin most of the time. He'd devote himself to it if there was a particular thing he needed to research, but he usually left such tasks to people better suited for it.

Her inquiry caused his interest to perk up as well. He glanced at the wall as well, knowing what stood behind it. "There has to be something," he figured.

With that, he stood up, offering his hand to her. "Come on, let's go." Apparently he'd made the decision for the both of them, and it wasn't long before they were off in the direction of the town.

It would be nice to get out.
