Yuna placed the last cup in the cupboard. She stepped back to admire her work, the dishes were done, the counters were scrubbed, and the floor was mopped, the kitchen sparkled. Yuna knew it was wrong but she couldn’t help but take a little pride in her work. She had the house to her self one of the few times this happened. Her house, also being the house of local healer was always full of people, when her father was home, but this afternoon he was not. Braska had left that morning, after breakfast, to check up on Mandy and her newborn twins.
Yuna walked down the long hallway that lead to her father’s study, feeling the cold wood against her bare feet. She wanted to reread that chapter on treating animal attacks before her father returned. She had almost reached the door when something caught her eye. The storage room was open, and someone was inside. The storage room was a small room with shelf reaching the ceiling. The room is always cold and poorly light. This is where Braska kelp the extra supplies.
Yuna paused “Had Father come home early?” she asked her self. Taking a deep breath she poked her head into the storage room. To her surprise she found the refugee. He was sitting on a stool with his shirt off in an attempt to change the bandages. He was having a hard time at it as. Yuna laughed at his sad attempt cover the wound on his back. This small laugh was all it took to bring it to the man’s attention he was being watched. He dropped the gauze and stood up so fast he knocked the stool over causing a loud thump.
“I’m sorry to have startled you.” Yuna apologized.
The man laughed. Yuna gave him a confused look. “I broke the lock on your door, made a mess of the extremely need shelves, and was stealing your bandages. Yet you are the one who apologizes. Yuna you are far to nice.”
Yuna smiled he had a point the room was a mess. “Well you have learned my name sir, yet I do not know yours.”
He smirked “It Aydin.”
“Well Aydin if you don’t mind my asking what are you doing?” Yuna asked.
“I was trying to change this bandages. They itch.” He replied with a cocky tone.
“Well why are you doing it your self?” Yuna returned in her own cocky tone.
“Because your father isn’t here and-“
“And you are in a hurry to leave.” Yuna cut him off.
“Well yes. I am need to. I have stayed here longer then I should.” He picked the stool up and began to pick up the gauze as well.
“You should stay here until you are well.” Said Yuna and she began taking the gauze from him and replacing it in the proper place.
“I don’t have that kind of time. There is someone who is waiting for me.” Aydin turned away from Yuna.
Yuna wished he hadn’t looked away. There was pain in his eyes and she wanted to know why but she knew it wasn’t her place. “Well if you insist on leaving then at least let me change your bandages. I can send you with some potions.”
“Thank you. I know what kind of risk this is to you.” He grab his shirt from the floor and began to twist it in he calloused hands, before putting it on.
“Follow me.” Yuna lead him out of the storage room. “ What do you mean, a risk to me?” Yuna lead the man to a side room.
“I have been here a few days. Long enough to learn that it is not a woman’s place to do what is deemed a man’s job. And healing I assume is a man’s job by your society’s standards.” Aydin said as he stepped inside the room.
This is the room Braska used to treat the people who were in need of his skills. It was bigger that the storage room but still small. The size of the room made it a cozy environment for Braska to do his work.
“Well you are right. I’m not allowed to do my father’s job. But I am not going to let you leave the islands in the state you are in.” Yuna pause. “Now…please take your shirt off.
Aydin said nothing about how uncomfortable Yuna was with asking a man to take his shirt off, and just did as he was asked. Yuna set to work. It was 15mins before anyone said anything.
Yuna cleared her throat. “ I don’t think you should leave. You will just get yourself hurt again. These wound are really bad but they are looking better than when you came.”
“That is good to hear. This is the path I have chosen it is not an easy one, but it is important to me and that is all I need.”
Yuna played those words over in her head ‘it is important to me and that is all I need’ she like the resolve she saw in this man and wished she could have a resolve that strong of her own. “Who do you fight for?” You asked as she tied off the bandage. She looked him in the eyes that pain she has seen earlier was back.
“Weren’t you going to give me some potions?” He quickly changed the subject.
Yuna smile and looked down at the floor ashamed of her curiosity. “Oh yes.” She answered timidly.
Aydin lifted Yuna’s head gently with his hand so he could look into her eyes. She had one blue and one green he never noticed before. “Yuna.” He spoke her name softly. “Yuna you have more to offer the worlds then most men I have met. So never look down to anyone. And never believe they are better that you or deserve more than you just because you are female. Yuna you have a great talent and never let anyone or thing stop you from following the path you choose for yourself.”
Yuna bit her lip. “Thank…” She took a breath. “Thank you. Aydin. Now let me get you those potions.” With that she grabbed the blood bandages and left, closing the door behind her. She smiled to her self as she walked down to the hiding place of her potions. She pulled out 3 of her best. Yuna went down the hall to throw the bandages out. She stopped cold as the figure of a man approached her.
“Yuna!” The figure bellowed. “What are you doing?!”
Yuna knew she had been caught. She was stand in front of a councilman with bloody bandages in one hand and 3 potions in the other, and father was not even home.
