The sudden loud crash, followed by a billowing cloud of dust as one wall of the tavern was reduced to rubble left Norrington largely unfazed. Ah, it was very uncommon for those in Tortuga to be aware enough to be capable of sensible thinking or conversation, since more often than not they were too beaten, bloody, or fall-down drunk to do so. He had the unfortunate karma of pilfering the drink of the only one with his bearings about him. Apparently, they even knew as much to call him by name-surname-improper name. Norrington gripped the edge of the table, but kept his gaze locked with Jack's.

'Mister Norrington' instead of 'Commodore' - either the pirate had gotten wind of his current situation or he was deliberately aiming to insult him, unwittingly striking just the right nerve with his words. No, a 'respectable gent' would never be seen in a place like this. It appalled him to acknowledge how far he had fallen, although it was no secret to him in the first place.

"Not at all," he replied, his voice laced with a sardonic tone as he gave Jack a humourless smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Kind of you to visit. I do hope you'll consider staying for a while." One of his hands left the table and he gestured towards the chair opposite his own, suggesting that Jack take a seat.

"I'm sure we have much to catch up on, Captain Sparrow ( ... )

This was a most unexpected proposition. Jack did pause out of err in caution, the only thing the two had spoken about in the past were clads and irons; all the catching up they did were nothing more than commanded euphemisms about silence and graves. Ordinarily he would make it a point not to stay anywhere nearby a bluecoat and risk himself a gallows, but more ordinarily said respectable gent wouldn’t be anywhere within a fortnight of Tortuga’s port ( ... )
