And suddenly, the man was gone.

She felt his absence before she saw it, but when she felt the shimmer across her reality her brown eyes snapped open and she whirled to face the empty doorway. The pale man’s darkness had vanished from her borrowed memory of the map, leaving no residue of shadow in its place. River stepped forward, her forehead creased with concentration and her hand extended to brush the stone beside the doorway. Cool, smooth. Everything was smooth.

Riku, too. The boy with two voices. Both voices were now silent and a cold panic tightened around her as the town rolled out with no point of reference. She pressed her back against the wall and let the coldness bleed through the pale man’s shirt. The darkness was changing, now. Everything was changing, and she was untethered and lost.
