Motorcycle

My father in law is getting a motorcycle this summer, so the "barrier" to me getting one has been destroyed. They get great gas mileage, are not extremely difficult to maintain, and are fun to ride. So, I'm thinking of getting a used bike, one that's good for a "beginner" rider. Thoughts as to whether or not I should get it? What bike to get? Signup list for rides?
The one I'm looking at right now is a 1986 Kawasaki Vulcan 750cc.
