Dear Yuletide Writer

Nov 17, 2011 01:03

Hi Yuletide writer!

First off, I apologize for the super long letter. Feel free to skip this entirely, as everything you need to know is already in my sign-ups! This is for...in case you are the type of writer who likes to know more. ;)

I hope this letter will be helpful for you rather than limiting! ♥ Please remember that optional details are optional, and let me tell you that I will be absolutely ecstatic to receive fic in any of the following tiny fandoms. Especially since these fandoms are so tiny that it's quite hard to fangirl about them (yet now I'll be receiving fic for one of them? amazing~!). My requests are all from manga this year, two shoujo and two shounen. I've provided information about each series in case you like to be adventurous.

To any passersby, I am very fond of treats. Yum. ;)

My general likes: To sum it up, I like long, plotty fic. Yeah. The longer, the better (it'd make me squeal so much to receive long fic) but I know not everyone writes long fic, and not everyone can write that many words in the amount of time we're given, and sometimes fics themselves just want to be short. I myself am quite terrible at long fic, though I'm also not that great at being concise either (I'm only good at spewing out words that go nowhere...). You are definitely not required to write long fic, but if you happen to be inspired by a monstrous and ravenous plotbunny, know that it would make me very happy. (I am greedy in that way. More!! Mooore!!) Short fic will be just as loved, and I will marvel at you for being so succinct. It's definitely a skill I still need to acquire, or at least reacquire, since I seem to have lost it somewhere along the way. I hope the prompts I've included in the optional details will provide you inspiration for either long fic or short fic (or somewhere in between) depending on what your comfort is.

Other than "give me plottiness!" I enjoy stories that make me smile. I adore a touch of humor here and there, and I also appreciate bittersweet turns of events, but I do so love happy endings. Character studies, stories that focus on friendship and family, stories that explore how a character gets from one point to the next, stories that follow the tone of the original source, and so forth are favorites of mine. I mostly like gen and don't care too much about the physical aspect of relationships, but exploring bonds shared between characters is much loved too. I lean towards liking het and slash if you do wish to explore a romantic relationship in your writing. I also like it when dysfunctional relationships are explored (power differences and such) but I think this won't come into play much with the series I've requested.

If any of the above doesn't work out for your fic, please don't worry about it! It would just make me happy if it does work out, but rest assured that I actually read a wide range of genres (and am not very easily squicked if you truly wish to break my mind).

About AUs and crossovers (only if you're a fan of them!):
I would like not to receive complete AUs of the following series if possible, as I feel there's still so much more to explore in the original canon. I'm fine with (and love) AUs that explore what happens when some event in the original verse is changed though~. It's fascinating to see how one small change might cause drastic differences (or no differences at all). But like everything else, if AU is what you're inspired by, go for it.

I'm also a huge crossover lover (I love when characters meet and have to figure each other out) and generally don't mind reading a crossover that features a series I don't know, as long as the characters I do know are learning about the other characters along with me. ;)

I only mention AUs and crossovers in case your inspiration somehow involves them. Otherwise, feel free to ignore this entire section, as I am not requesting either.

My fics:
If you feel you'll be more comfortable writing for me after figuring out what kind of writer I am, you can find my fics here at ffnet, here at LJ, or here at AO3. I'm not yet a writer who's capable of writing what I like to read, so this might not be all that helpful. ;) Well, I think I've gotten the gen part and the fluffy part down, but definitely not the epic plotty part. I have only written in Double Arts out of the series I'm requesting, and that was only short drabbles. You can also find my bookmarks and favorited fics over at my ffnet and AO3 accounts.

And now, finally, the actual series I've requested. You can find my babble on these series (not a lot) through corresponding tags at this journal.

1. NG Life

NG Life is a shoujo manga series by Kusanagi Mizuho about a high school student named Saeki Keidai who happens to remember his past life as Sirix Lucretius Fronto, a gladiator from Pompeii. Although he's been reincarnated and is now a high school student, he still remembers his past life, except he seems to be the only one who does. This brings him a lot of trouble when his younger sister has now become his mom, his old rival has become his dad, his used-to-be male best friend is now his female best friend, and his used-to-be wife is now a male middle school student. Keidai finds himself in a dilemma when he still very much loves his deceased wife, but Yuuma, even though he looks like Keidai's wife and is her reincarnation, is not the same person as his wife. At the same time, Keidai keeps treating Serizawa, his current female best friend, as if she were the same person as his used-to-be male best friend from way back when even though Serizawa doesn't remember a thing about Pompeii. The series is humorous, with a dash of touching turns of events here and there as Keidai comes to term with his current life and his past life.

What I like most about this series is the fact that it doesn't drive home the idea of soulmates, and that the characters end up recognized for being themselves. The story is told at what I felt was a great pace, as things aren't revealed all at once and felt more like pieces of a puzzle sliding together.

I adore all of the characters in the series, which is why I've picked "any" in my request, but my favorite character goes to Loleus, Serizawa's past self, because of how supportive he always was to Sirix. He's the most awesome friend ever, and Serizawa certainly has the same attribute. I did not nominate him as I hope he'll be explored via Serizawa's thoughts about her past self (if he is explored).

My second favorite character is Shinogu because of how he's had to live his life knowing he was female in his previous life. I find him fascinating (how did he adapt? did he have any trouble?) and love that he never pushes for any of the other characters to remember their past selves. From the start, he recognized the present characters for who they are in the present. I admire him for that.

Below is what was included in my Yuletide sign-up. They're prompts for all the nominated characters. I hope these will be inspiring!

I would love a fic set after the series, or something that explores them growing up (with their memories for those that still remember, or without their memories but feeling things are familiar or wrong, like something's missing, for those that don't remember).

If Keidai is the main in your story, perhaps he seeks to further his relationship with Serizawa and runs into various obstacles, such as realizing that he's never gone out of his way to find out what Serizawa likes because he always assumed she would act the same as Loleus, things like that. Perhaps Serizawa's parents give Keidai a lot of trouble over dating their girl. If you don't want to explore that relationship, perhaps you can explore Keidai adapting to his current life, finding out what he likes in the present. He's always compared his life to his life in Pompeii. What happens when he stops doing that all the time?

If Serizawa is the focus, perhaps she's slowly regaining her memories as Loleus. How does Serizawa respond? Does she accept it, thinking Keidai would want his friend back? Does she fight against it, not wanting to lose her sense of self? I would love to see Loleus actually awaken and find out that he's been reincarnated as a girl. What does he feel about Keidai's new life? Whether or not Serizawa's memories as Loleus are permanent or not is up to you! If not this route for Serizawa, I would still love to see her thoughts about Loleus explored. Maybe she continues to ask Keidai about Loleus and tries to learn more about him. Maybe Keidai shares a story about some adventure he went on with Loleus in the past, and Serizawa strives to reenact that adventure in the present.

If you choose to focus on Shinogu, I would love exploration about how he grew up. How was it like growing up as a man when he used to be a busty female? In fact, how was it like, growing up while still remembering the past? I also adore interaction between Shinogu and Mikage (the snark!). So if you could fit Mikage in, platonically or otherwise, would make me happy. (I do ship them)

If you decide to focus on Yuuma, I am slightly less interested in him as a character, but I would love to see his POV on the other characters, and I would love to know if knowing that he was a girl in his past life has had any long lasting effect on him.

I'm hoping one of the ideas above will inspire you (they're meant to be separate prompts, so don't feel like you need to mash them together! That would be hard, but you're welcome to try). If none of them inspire you, please feel free to skip over them and explore your own ideas~.

My post right after I finished reading the series might also help you in getting a feel for what I enjoy about the series if you'd like to give it a read!

Length and Availability:
NG Life is complete at 9 volumes. It is published and released in English in North America by Tokyopop. (If you search for NG Life, you can find scans of it online.)

2. Usotsuki Lily

Usotsuki Lily is a lighthearted shoujo manga series by Komura Ayumi that doesn't take itself seriously at all. The premise is that Saotome Hinata, our female protagonist, is asked out by a hot guy, Shinohara En. Being the shallow person that she is (she was immediately charmed by his gorgeous looks), she immediately agrees to go out with him and wonders why she's never seen him around at school before, only to find out later that En is a perpetual crossdresser because he hates guys so much that he can't even stand his own reflection, so he solves this dilemma by crossdressing. And makes a very pretty girl.

(I really like it when the girls dress as guys, and the guys stay dressed as guys. I guess I must like the eyecandy...)

I like the series for its humor. The characters constantly break the fourth wall, reminding us to reread chapter so-and-so to refresh our memories about some one-off character that has suddenly become more important. Characters tell us they haven't been named. Characters lament about how the mangaka treats them. Important characters sometimes get introduced in offhand comments. The mangaka's author notes are also very humorous!

The below is what was included in my sign-up!

I would love fic featuring any of the nominated characters as this is a series that I like for its general atmosphere. A fic in the mood of the series would be the most awesome ever, but if you'd like to go for something that's not at all like the series' atmosphere, I would also love to see what you come up with for that!

I adore crossdressing Hinata (I find that she looks very handsome as a guy) and crossdressing Gotou (she is even more handsome), so if you can fit either of those in, I would be very happy. I also adore Taiyou. I find him very cool. I adore En when he's not crossdressing, so I would love it if he needed to not crossdress for once (how does he deal with that?).

Some prompt ideas: Exploration of Hinata and Taiyou's sibling relationship? Hinata and Taiyou getting mistaken for twins when Hinata crossdresses? School field trip with Hinata and En? Male fashion show (that's somehow dominated by the women)? Exploration of Gotou's relationship with the class president? Any holiday-related fic? How do the characters celebrate the holidays? Body-swap fic? (Hinata and En getting swapped? How do they respond?) What about future fic? Is En still crossdressing ten years down the line? Are Hinata and En still as in love as ever? Has Taiyou given in to En's brother's advances?

Again, these are meant to be separate prompts. Don't feel as if you need to mash them together, and feel free to explore ideas I haven't listed! I don't have too much headcanon for this series and would just love to see more of these characters and their hijinks!

Length and Availability:
Usotsuki Lily currently has 5 published volumes. It has not been licensed and released in English. You can find scanlations by Hachimitsu Scans online.

3. Double Arts

Double Arts is a shounen manga by Komi Naoshi that ran in Shounen Jump. It was canceled after 23 chapters, so it came to an abrupt end, which is why I'm requesting it. I'd love to see a continuation!

The world of Double Arts is plagued with an epidemic known as "Troy" that has no cure. It is transmitted through skin-contact. Only Sisters, trained females who have a high resistance to the disease, are able to stop seizures caused by the disease by taking the disease into themselves, but even they have a limit to how much they can absorb into their body. When Elraine starts going into seizures, she thinks her life's over, but then comes Kiri who takes her hand and somehow stops the seizures. They are then forced to join hands for as long as Troy exists unless they want Elraine to die, as she goes into seizures whenever they aren't holding hands. Elraine thinks that perhaps Kiri is the key to finding a cure for Troy.

I love the world the mangaka built. I find it very rich, and I greatly enjoyed the battle formations he came up with for Kiri and Elraine (with how they must fight with their hands joined). As the series ended at only 3 volumes, what I'd love to see is a continuation, something that directly continues Kiri and Elraine's journey.

Below is what I've included in my sign-up.

I would love a direct continuation of Kiri and Elraine's journey. I would love it if a wide cast was included, and if their enemies were fleshed out more since we haven't met a lot of them. What kind of dances do Kiri and Elraine learn? How do they make it their own? How do the other characters, like Fallan and Sui, figure into Kiri and Elraine's journey? What happens when they reach headquarters? Do they ever reach headquarters? Do Kiri and Elraine ever return for the festival? What exactly is Kiri's power?

If you wish to explore something sadder, I would find it fascinating if it turns out that the only way they can find a cure is if they experiment on Kiri for the good of mankind, but experimentation must come at a cost... does Kiri keep this from Elraine? Is Elraine fine with this?

Please feel free to explore other ideas if none of what I outlined fits in with what you feel a continuation would cover! Also feel free to explore things outside of a continuation if you can't write a continuation or would rather write something set during the series.

Length and Availability:
Double Arts is complete at 3 volumes, and is completely scanlated. You should be able to find scans online!

4. Dear Boys

Dear Boys is a sports manga about basketball by Hiroki Yagami that has ran for quite some time. It's a long series! I've read all of Act 1 and Act 2 as well as Early Days, but I'm still making my way through Act 3 and am not entirely current with it, but I don't mind spoilers as I do have the most current volumes...I just need to read them! The series starts when Aikawa Kazuhiko, a genius player, joins the Mizuho team and helps them get back into shape, as the team had been banned from competing for a year before this. The team grows close despite initial conflicts, and they then begin to aim for the championship together. (*coughs* My pictures are all of Fuse Ayumi and the Shonan team...)

I love the series for how much we learn about each character, and I love the rivals. My favorite character in the series is one of the rival characters - Fuse Ayumi. I love his stubbornness. I love the hard work he puts into learning the basics. I love how he sticks to his ideals. I love how he's not exactly a genius. I love how smug he is and how he took over the third years' positions despite being a second year. I love how he relented and commanded his sempai to help in the matches, knowing that they needed three pointers and his sempai was all they had (their bickering is so fun). I love how he had to confront his ideals, to rethink his strong beliefs about how basketball is played. I love how he's secretly cheering for Mizuho but would never admit it to anyone.

Feel free to write gen fic about him, or feel free to pair him off with anyone you wish. (I do adore him with Touya or Aikawa or that sempai of his, though I can't recall his name off the top of my head. I would also be greatly intrigued if you pair him or play him off of a player who specializes in three-pointers.)

My actual sign-up:

Write me any fic about Fuse Ayumi, and I will be ecstatic! Does he lead his team to the championship in the following year? Has he changed his beliefs? How does his team view him? How is he as a captain? Does he cross paths with Touya again? What were his middle school years like?

Please see my Yuletide letter if you'd like to know what I like about the character~.

Seriously, any fic about Fuse Ayumi will make me burst with happiness. ♥

(If you follow my Dear Boys tag in this journal, you'll find a very old entry where I talk about how I feel that Fuse Ayumi and Hiyoshi Wakashi from Prince of Tennis are kind of a like. I also mention that I don't like Hiyoshi much while I do like Fuse a lot. This has changed though. I adore Hiyoshi now! Er, this was random, haha...but you know, sports series and all...).

Length and Availability:
Dear Boys is a looong series. There are 23 volumes in Act 1, 30 volumes in Act 2, and 8 volumes in Act 3 so far. It hasn't been released in English, and scanlations aren't current at all. I hope you were able to read the series in another language. If not, there is also a 26 episode anime that covers a lot of Act 1 (the animation is terrible though, but you'll meet Fuse in it). There are also two musicals of the series that you might be able to find floating around (though I don't believe they've been subbed). The musicals cover Aikawa joining the team, and then Mizuho versus East Honmoku (the first rival team they play). Fuse does not actually make an appearance in the musicals as the storyline hasn't gotten that far.

Again, I apologize for the super long letter. Optional details are optional, and the same goes for the entire letter! If you read through all of this...props to you! Please remember to have fun and to take what you want out of this and ignore whatever else isn't helpful for you~. Some series prompts are longer than others only because I have more headcanon for them than for the other series, but I'm just as excited about all the series!
