Chapter Thirteen

The ding of the elevator sounded in the atrium followed by the sort shush of the doors opening.  Two small heads peeked round the corner towards the large glass doors dominating one side of the room before retreating and beginning a whispered conversation.

Outside the front of the building stood a churning mass of photographers and reporters, each one eager to get the first picture or interview of the famously estranged Jonas Brother.  Luckily for the group inside the elevator the large glass panels that made up the building were mirrored and the security team hired by the companies housed inside were the best at their job.  Nobody was getting in.  Unfortunately that also meant that nobody was getting out at the moment.  Well nobody that is until Miley Cyrus decided that she wanted out followed quickly by the rest of her friends.  The flashes, shouts and screams were cut off as the last person made their way from the building and the huge doors swung closed.

Peeking out from the safety of the elevator Joe scanned the nearby people, before beckoning his family out from behind him.

The various Jonas’s plus Carlisle and Big Rob made their way to the other side of the atrium where several more elevators stood.

Pushing a button the doors smoothly slid open, the group stepping inside, Joe last.  As the doors closed Joe brought a key out of his pocket and, opening a panel, slid the key into a hole under the various buttons, twisting it 45 degrees right before hitting the number one button.

The elevator began to smoothly descend with several people looking at Joe in bemusement.  He turned towards his mother and brothers, glancing at them before smirking and flipping his collar up.

“Just call me Jonas…Joe Jonas” he quipped, grinning at the laughter of his twins and the snorts from everyone else.

With a shudder the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened on the underground parking garage that belonged to the building.

“Ok, you guys stay here a minute,” Joe said turning to his family. “Rob could you come with me?”

Receiving an affirmative nod from the large bodyguard Joe turned and walked further into the garage while the others stood by the elevator puzzled.

“Unca Lyle?” piped up Ava. “Why aren’t we going with Daddy to his car?”

“I have no clue Ava” answered Carlisle.

“Well we can’t all go in Daddy’s car.” Lucas decided to make his opinion known.  “Michael would get squished.”

“Just Michael hey?” said Carlisle bemused. “And how would the rest of us fit in?”

“Well that’s easy,” answered Lucas, as if it should be obvious. “I’d sit on your knee and Ava would sit on Grandma’s knee and Unca Frankie would sit on the big scary mans knee.”

“But what about Uncle Kevin and Uncle Nick?” questioned Carlisle, thoroughly amused by the four year olds logic.

Turning to his uncle Lucas shook his head in apparent disappointment.

“Daddy will be sitting on their knee,” he said slowly, huffing when he heard the muffled laughter from behind him.

Luckily the family was saved from the four year olds ire by the return of Joe.

“You lose something on the way Joe?” Frankie asked, laughing.

“Ha such the comedian Tank” Joe huffed, appearing eerily similar to his four year old son.

“Rob’s driving my car home,” he answered. “I was just showing him the address on the sat nav.”

“The big man’s taking our car Daddy?” Ava asked apparently shocked. “How will we get home?!”

Just at that moment a stretch Limousine pulled up in front of the group, ‘Shaws” written across it in large black lettering.

“I borrowed a ride from a friend.” Joe grinned.  “It belongs to one of the companies in the building.  The CEO is a friend and when I explained the situation he said I could borrow it. Jump in.”

Xxxxx

As the limo pulled out of the back entrance onto the street everyone held their breath as they saw the large number of reporters camped outside.  There was a collective sigh of relief as they glanced at the car but then returned their attention to the garage.

“Mission accomplished.” Joe sighed, slouching in his seat.  “Even I amaze myself with my brilliance sometimes.”

“I’m loving the modesty there Joseph,” Carlisle teased, grinning at his friend who looked completely relaxed snuggled in between Kevin and Nick.

Nick was curled into Joe’s left side; head resting on his shoulder and fingers entwined with Joe’s, their hands resting on Joe’s knee.

Joe was similarly leaning into Kevin, their hands also joined, Joe’s right with Kevin’s right as Kevin’s left curved around Joe’s shoulders, fingers lightly touching Nick’s curls.

“Modesty? What is this modesty you speak of? I’ve never heard of it.” Joe joked, a lazy grin spreading across his face.

“Obviously,” Carlisle said wryly

“You’re just jealous of my brilliance.”

“Uh huh”

“You are”

“Uh huh”

“See, my brilliance has made you speechless.”

“Uh huh”

“Oh the cleverness of me.”

“Uh huh”

“You…are a codfish.”

“What?!”

“What?

“A codfish?!”

“Yup”

“Where did that come from?”

“Peter.”

“Peter?”

“Yes Peter.”

“Peter who?”

“No, Peter Pan.”

“What?”

“What?”

The conversation was ended by Carlisle launching a cushion at Joe’s face, Joe deciding to hide himself in Kevin’s shoulder, which was shaking with laughter.

“Really boys,” Denise mock scolded.  “Which ones are the children here?”

“We are Grandma,” Ava piped up, looking at Denise strangely.  “Daddy and Unca Lyle are old.  Unca Lyle even found a grey hair!”

Ava shrieked as Carlisle’s lean fingers tickled her sides while the rest were in hysterics at the child’s reasoning.  They were so wrapped up in their own little world that they never noticed the car stopping, only realising when the chauffer opened the door.

Laughing Ava launched herself from the car, followed quickly by Carlisle as they ran up the driveway.  The rest of the family followed slowly behind, Denise, Kevin, Nick and Frankie looking round them in awe at Joe’s home.

“You live here Joe?”  Frankie asked, shocked.  “How much money are you worth now?!”

“Franklin!” scolded Denise, smacking her youngest round the head.  “Don’t be so rude!”

“Sorry” Frankie mumbled, rubbing the back of his head.

“Daddy’s really rich!” said Lucas.  “He has like a hundred dollars!”

“Wow a hundred dollars!” exclaimed Carlisle as the Jonas’s drew level with him and a squirming Ava.  “Joseph you’ve been holding out on me.”

Rolling his eyes Joe dug into his pocket for the front door key, placing it in the lock and then hurriedly entering his security code into the alarm pad.  Pushing the door open he motioned the others in first before walking in last, pulling the door closed behind him and locking it once again.
