I have discovered that the secret to keeping my goldfish tank, filled with 11 goldfish which range from 6-10 inches long each, clean, is to remove the filter and simply not replace it.

I've raised these fish for two years, and goldfish being the dirty little buggers they are, the tank can get foggy within a couple days even directly after a thorough water change and tank cleaning. I have gone through a ton of filter pads.

However, my wallet got sick of it, so about a month ago I pulled out the last filter and threw it away. I figured it was better to have a strong flow of water than a dirty clogged pad. ...And what do ya know, the water in the tank has been crystal clear since, and the fish are more active than ever.
