I love the smell of chagrin in the morning.
Humiliation. The all purpose, inflated ego cleanser. Its humble pie and reality check rolled into one delightful little package that can be generously applied to anyone who puts them self on an undeserving, lofty pedestal. Now, I live in Orange County and if there ever was a slogan for the O.C it'd be 'The O.C, where style will always trump substance'. In other words, Ive stepped in puddles that are deeper than most of the people around here. Sure, people dress well (The women are too thin and dont have any God given curves. I mean whet the hell is a size 0? But I'll get to that in a future post) but that's all they seem to care about. So if anywhere could do with a good dose of humility to bring it back down to earth, its the O.C.
However. Humiliation, being the schizophrenic master that it is, can also bring down the unwary if you're not careful. For instance, say you just went for your early morning stroll to Starbucks for a hot and steamy cup of Colombian goodness, as you're walking home, sipping your tall black, you notice how beautiful the morning sky looks as the Sun is shooting all sorts of beams of light through an eerily ghostlike cloud formation. As you romantically look to the Heavens in wonder, you fail to see the concrete stopping block that is scattered throughout the car park that you're walking through. It only takes .003 of a second for Awe and wonder to become humiliation and embarrassment. Thankfully I didn't completely hit the deck, I only went down on one knee....albeit rapidly. Alas, I then found out that Starbucks Coffee cups aren't terribly stable and shouldn't be used as any type of braking system.....and the Coffee was bloody hot on my hand, too!
As far as I know, no one saw my little misstep but that doesn't make it any less embarrassing. And why are things still embarrassing when there's no one there to see it? That doesn't make any sense. Anyway, that was my morning and Im happy to say that humble pie goes quite well with a a tall Black.
