I have spent several hours sitting on my butt the last few days. I sat on my butt in the car while we drove through negative 5 degree weather to go to the Springfield Symphony Hall where I sat on my butt while listening to a performance of Scheherazade (and other pieces). Yesterday I sat on my butt in the car while we went to the movies, where I sat on my butt a little over 3 hours while watching, and getting a headache from, Return of the King. With each installment of LoTR, I have walked out with a headache because of the loud music (often played at totally inappropriate moments just because nothing is really going on the screen but traveling) and loud sound effects. Is it just my theater that is blaring the score?
Warning - beefing about the LoTR movies follows.
Well, I watched all three, and I resolutely affirm that (some things aside, special effects for instance) I am one of the minority that hasn't enjoyed Jackson's movies. (We are out there though, I know I am not alone.) Out of the three movies, he spends about 30 minutes on drawn out death scenes and sappy goodbyes, 10 minutes on slow motion horses, 5 minutes on dwarf tossing jokes, etc. Add that up, and you have plenty of time to add to story. I do understand that some things needed to be cut for time, but I disagree with some of the changes and how they were implemented and WHY they were done in that fashion. Only in the third movie do we start to see some of the character dignity that is found starting in page 1 of the book. Merry and Pippen, I am sorry, in the first 2 movies they shouldn't have been Middle Earth's version of Cheech and Chong or the lead characters in Dumb and Dumber. Well, it takes time to develop characters, etc... but Jackson had plenty of time. I cite "Willow" as an example of how to do a movie in that style, start to finish, the way Jackson could have, and perhaps should have done.
