It seems to be the fashion at the moment to marginalise the role of a father, and trivialise their importance. I cannot find words strong enough to express my despair and annoyance towards this line of behaviour. Children need a dad as much as a mum so today I want to say 'thank you' to my dad, and to the man who fathers my children.
Thank you for all the things you made for me when I was little -my guitar, the ingenious toys, the stories; for a knee to sit on even though your arthritis was killing you; teaching me how to use a soldering iron and bandsaw; giving me an appreciation of plants and gardens; your time and patience.
Thank you for the many times you ferry them around, for the hours you put in at work to provide creature comforts; for the 'quiet words' you have with them when they upset me; your time and interest.
"The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love and cherish their mother."

"Fathers, like mothers, are not born. Men grow into fathers- and fathering is
a very important stage in their development."
