I had three good friends - Eric, Andreas and Gary (though he graduated a year before I did).

Ha, none.

Didn't.

Sometimes out in the woods on militia exercises, sometimes playing games at a friend's house, sometimes home watching TV.

Ha, no. But I did misbehave at a few mess parties.

Oh yeah: I was one of the "smart" kids.

No, but I did get in trouble for sassing a teacher (In a connect-the-related-words test, he wrote my name in one column and "generally bad student" in the other, so I added his name in one column and "fuckup of a teacher" in the other. Guess who got lectured about appropriate behaviour.).

Yes. The dance was Friday night, I went to that then I went on a patrol exercise all weekend with no sleep, then the grad ceremony on Sunday afternoon after I'd washed off the camouflage paint and changed clothes.

Ha, no. The most useful thing I learned in high school was how to type.

I remember falling half-asleep during the grad ceremony and kind of splitting in half mentally: half of me was listening to the class valedictorian play "Seasons in the Sun" on the guitar, the other half was listening to remembered small-arms fire from the ambush that morning. I went to my 10-year, glad I did but was kind of depressed at the time as I had just come back from Japan and was having trouble readjusting. I went to a picnic that was part of my 20-year, I had just gotten Gizmo off my leg and was hobbling aroudn in a squeaky black brace.
