Watching and Waiting

Being on the ship while an away mission was in progress was nothing out of the ordinary. Most of the crew would probably never notice the difference, consumed with their own tasks that kept the ship running smoothly. Others might be disappointed they hadn't been selected for the mission, or wonder what was going on down on the surface. This mission... it was special, there was no hiding that. With all that had been happening on board of late, rumors were bound to run wild. Some of them, Paula reflected, might even be true.

She stood at the window in the large observation deck, gazing out at the stars. There was something odd about the events leading up to this mission. The fight she'd heard described over and over, and it still didn't make sense to her, the things people claimed they'd seen. An imposter revealed, but just exactly what he was, she hadn't figured out. What he claimed to be was another story entirely, or so she was told. The rumors were preposterous enough to make her scoff, but for the fact that she'd caught Leonard reading up on Norse mythology when she'd stopped by his office. Which made her wonder.

None of it added up, and it made her head ache to keep going around in circles. Paula was trained to look at a problem and apply logic and science to find her answers. But there was something here that defied both, and the only people who could supply the missing links for her were planetside. Which meant there was nothing to do except watch and wait, and hope the information they'd been given was reliable.

never a dull moment, exploring strange new worlds
