01 [Locked from Mr. Scott]

Feb 28, 2010 19:21

I'd forgotten how much I dislike being on active duty. There's a reason I'm a historian, not a technician.

I was assigned to keep an eye on the power pull from the impulse controls, and I swear I looked down at my PADD for one second and Mr. Scott gets on my case about it.

At least I don't have to do that again for another week or so.

What part of history do you specialize in?

Classical Earth history. My focus is historical leaders, most especially emperors, explorers, and pioneers, and how they relate to space exploration, although of course the scope of human history is much broader.

That's quite the task to take on. I have a few old history books. I'm not sure if any of them would have anything you'd be interested in or have any information you wouldn't already know, but I wouldn't mind sharing them.

Oh, I couldn't possibly ask you to share them! I mean... Well, if you really don't mind letting me borrow them...

I promise I'll take good care of them. Do you know when they were printed? I would love to get my hands on something printed before the 1900s, but of course it's so rare to find anything intact, especially before the Eugenics Wars.

Of course I don't mind! Maybe I will just make you hang out for a while and tell me about it all because I definitely need to brush up on my history.

I can't guarantee anything pre-1900's. There might be one that is close. I'll have to go searching for it, though. Why don't you come by my quarters. We can have a glass of wine and talk chivalry?

I'm afraid I don't drink, but if you really wouldn't mind me talking your ear off about my studies... I mean, I know a lot of people think history is dull and boring but they really just don't know what they're missing. I've been researching the Golden Age of Sailing recently, and it's simply fascinating.

I should probably stop, or else I'll just take over this entire conversation.

Well, then what do you drink? Coffee? Tea?

And don't be silly, I'd love to hear about it. I'm far to curious for my own good. I've always needed a history tutor, anyway.

A little bit of both. Coffee and tea, I mean. Mostly tea. There's a chai blend I brought with me that you might like, if you want to try it. I mean, I know tea isn't everyone's cup of... tea... sorry, that was... really weird, I wasn't thinking about what I was saying.

Um. Anyway, if you really don't mind, I could use someone to bounce a couple of theories off of. Not that I mean I just want to use you as a sounding board, but...

This is so awkward. I'm so bad at this.

Well, just bring it with you. I'll exchange you tea for books and good company. Besides, my middle name may as well be sounding board.

You apparently haven't tried socializing with some of the men on this ship; they are much worse than you.

Oh, that's right... you're a psychiatrist, right? I don't know how I managed to forget that, I'm sorry. You must have people talking at you all day, and then here I am asking if I can bounce ideas off you...

Do not even get me started on the men on this ship.

It's alright. I wouldn't be a psychiatrist if I didn't enjoy it. Don't think of it that way, anyway. I've been looking for someone who would appreciate the books I've got.

If you're sure... I really don't want to impose on your time.

Honestly, someone needs to get in there and examine those books. Believe me, I've got time.

If you'd rather do it another time though, my door's always open. Just let me know.

I'd just hate to be a bother. I know I'll talk all night if you let me.

I've invited you over, if you didn't talk all night, I'd be worried.

Oh. Well.... okay. If you're sure.
