[Uhura is on the porch today, surrounded by what looks like the insides of an old-fashioned transistor radio. She is utterly absorbed in messing about with the various wires and metal bits - she's been so busy with these experiments lately that she's kind of missed the fact that an experiment is going on ( Read more... )

[Hey, Uhura! Uhura! Guess who one of your neighbors of like a month now sob is?]

Good afternoon, Uhura-san!

[It doesn't even cross her mind that being friends with a walking, talking skeleton is weird anymore. She just smiles brightly.]

Afternoon, Brook. Nice day, isn't it?

[That's because she's awesome]

Oh yes! Enjoying the fresh air while you work? [...on whatever that is]

Very much so.

Ever built a radio?

(( ! )) A radio! We don't have anything like that on my world, but Kouichi-san has told me about them! [The ones that play music, anyways. HE WANTS ONE OF THOSE.] You can make one?

Well, yes, basically. A transistor radio. I'm not really that used to working with such a primitive model, but the essentials remain the same.

Could I bother you to show me how it works? Or is it still a ways off from functioning?

Well, it's not functional right now, but you can probably get an idea. It uses radio waves to transmit messages - you can't see radio waves, but this tuner - [She points to a knob.] It'll tune the signal to an available frequency which, theoretically, allows me to send the message to anyone else who might be listening in on that frequency. It's primitive, but it's all I've got right now.

So you can talk through them as well... ((It's similar to a Den Den Mushi then-)) Does that mean you will need more than one of them, then?

[She shrugs.]

Where I come from, all starships are equipped with things like this. Theoretically, if I was able to get a signal past the barrier, any ship with a device capable of tuning to the correct frequency that would be in range would be able to get the message. ((I just wish there was a way to get a message to the Enterprise. If there's a way to find us, Kirk could do it.))
