[Today, Uhura is making herself useful. She's in the item shop, rummaging around for, well... anything that she might be able to convert into a radio, so a lot of non-working electronic stuff is piling up in a rucksack she's carrying.

Go on, ask her what she's doing/bug her/tease her/etc.]

[Kurtis is at the item shop, too. He has been trying to make a communication device for a while, but he hasn't had much luck. He's looking at many of the same parts as Uhura.]

[And this is possibly one of the strangest beings Uhura has encountered in Luceti so far. Still, she glances at him briefly and goes back to her examination of items.]

Clearly I'm not alone in my quest. Are you trying to build a communication device, too?

[Kurtis looks up at Uhura.]

I've been trying to for several weeks now. I even met a robot with a built-in communication device, but her range was limited.

[She nods, a little.]

We'd need something with a long range, as long as we can get, really, if there's to be any chance of making contact outside the barrier.

But since the barrier is made with Shifting, how can we be sure any signal will pass through it? My plan had been to only activate the device once there had been some alteration in the barrier, but I'd prefer not to wait if there's a way to avoid it.

What about these tunnels I've been told about? Maybe there's a way we could utilize those to our advantage? A long-shot, but I've learned sometimes that's the best way to go.

There is some machinery in the tunnels. What are you suggesting?

I'm not quite sure, yet. I'll probably go check them out soon, see what there is to see.

If you come up with anything, tell me. I was a scientist on my home world, so maybe I'll be able to help.

[She smiles a little.]

I'm just a linguist, but I dabble in engineering. I'm Uhura, by the way.

I'm Kurtis. I'm a cyberneticist, but I know a few things about communication technology.

Huh. Can I ask what world you're from? Or time?

I'm from Earth, originally. [He gives Uhura a year, probably sometime within a few decades of Star Trek itself]

[That does surprise her a little. She's used to seeing strange beings, but not strange beings claiming to be from Earth.[

Really? I can't say I've ever met anyone quite like you hailing from Earth.

Hmm? What do you...? Oh, yes, my appearance...

I was human originally. I was given this form after I died.

That's... quite a story.

[She'll leave it at that, for now. If he wants to explain further, he can, but it sounds like kind of a personal thing.]

This is by far the strangest parts shop I've ever been to.
