[Today, Uhura is making herself useful. She's in the item shop, rummaging around for, well... anything that she might be able to convert into a radio, so a lot of non-working electronic stuff is piling up in a rucksack she's carrying.

Go on, ask her what she's doing/bug her/tease her/etc.]

all work and no play, red is for operations, geek with nice legs, communicating is srs biznes, +action

[Oddly enough, that's not all that far off from what Cameron's coming in to do. She stops, observing the other girl for a moment or two more.]

What are you going to build?

Well, I'm hoping to build some kind of radio.

[And now she's finally going to look up at you.]

What about you?

That is a good idea.

[she looks around]

Batteries. I looked when I came to find my clothes, but I couldn't find any. I wanted to check. Just in case. I don't know if I have to make my own.

Yeah, I haven't seen any batteries, at least none that I recognize as batteries. I'll probably have to make some, if I can find the right components.

[she tips her head]

Can I help?

Sure. Do you have a lot of experience building radios? It's been a long time for me, and I'm not even sure what a lot of this stuff is.

A little. It depends on what kind of radio you are thinking of and what range you want it to have.

Whatever I can manage with the parts available here. That's a big part of the problem - I can't special-order any parts I need, I'm stuck with whatever I can find here.

That is a problem.

[Cam is silent for a moment looking around the room, and then down at the bits Uhura has already picked up, then she smiles a little]

I can make a crystal radio first. We can test for incoming waves.

[she shrugs]

It will be very simple. Until we find more.

lt_linguist December 16 2009, 22:34:03 UTC
That would work. Assuming there are any incoming waves. Probably not here.

I've been told there are some tunnels that might be of some use, though. Supposedly, there is working electricity there.

[This she didn't know. She tilts her head, considering for a moment, then nods.]

That will work if we are going to make anything powerful.

[she starts rummaging around, collecting a little pile of household/office supplies, then proceeds to sit down and start stripping the wire out of a half-gutted motor lying on the floor]

This I can make immediately. It will work better above-ground anyhow.

[...one most advanced cybernetic computer system in the history of mankind, and she's using WWII technology, oi]

[This stuff is pretty ancient by Uhura's standards, too. Still, she's impressed by the speed at which the other woman is working.]

I don't think I caught your name. I'm Uhura.

I'm Cameron. [she doesn't look up from her work, but her voice is still polite] It's nice to meet you. Where are you from?

The pleasure's all mine. I'm from Earth, stardate 2258. What about you?

[stardate? data entry not found]

What is a stardate measure? And the Malnosso took me from the year 2004.

...I think.

Stardates are simply converted from the old Gregorian calendar used on Earth. Spock thinks it's a little imprecise, but it's difficult to calculate the passage of time in space, anyway. So we've just kept using the same numbering system, more or less. Starfleet is headquartered on Earth, so it kind of makes sense to use Earth's system.
