He's been trying to get his old job back at the library since he lost it when his family shipped him to Scottsdale. One of his cousin's though had a way to earn some pocket cash. He turned this down, of course, but then Darius had to go plead his case to Grandma, and Grandma still had him on major restriction, so ( Read more... )

The party was one of those highbrow functions that Kate normally liked to avoid but couldn't always get out of. She could make polite conversation, and she did so, though she really missed just being able to wander off with her sister who was now hanging on her husband ( ... )

God frigg'n hates him today. "My cousin is a partner in the catering company. He plead his case to Grandma." He looks around. "Better take something to eat before they think I'm falling down on the job.

He so wants to just sneak off and just go see the the exhibit.

"Your family contibuted to the Jacob and Gwen Lawrence exhibition? That's actually really cool."

Kate pulled a piece of the tray and put it in her mouth. The food was actually pretty good which was one thing you could count on at a thing like this. "Oh, so I guess this means you're not working at the library at the moment," Kate said, mentally smacking herself for that astute observation.

Someone who's name she couldn't remember waved at her and Kate took another hors d'oeuvre off the tray. If this kept up she'd end up eating the whole thing.

"Yeah, we did. If you hear my father tell the story we own most of this museum," Kate said with a shrug. "It's a big part of the new exhibit actually."

"Nope. When they moved me to Scottsdale..." Because of the Law. Because of the YA. He shrugs and offers an treat to a passer-by. "I'm trying to get it back now that things are more settled and I'm officially back in Harlem."

"Um, after the set I have to do, want to try and sneak up there and look at it?" Too fast. Try again. "You know, field exercise?"

"Sounds interesting," Kate said with a grin, "How much longer you in for?" she asked raising an eyebrow, it was a short joke, comparing it to a prison sentence. Kate felt like she was behind bars at the moment herself.

The crowd gives mild applause as the band finishes their first set. "Okay and for this second bit," the announcer comments. "We're going to bring in a special guest singer -"

There is not a pit God has on this Earth deep enough for him to crawl in right now. This was fun - when he was 12. The normally unflappable certain looks "flapped," about now.

"Would you excuse me?"

Kate's jaw dropped. Eli was going to sing? This should be interesting if nothing else. She had to admit, she was curious to see if he was any good. He had to be if he was going to preform here.

Looking somewhat stunned, she said as he walked by. She didn't have a snappy one liner for this, she was genuinely curious about this. Kate maneuvered herself through the crowd easily so she had a good view. She couldn't miss this.

She tells any of them - Danny, Tommy, the old married couple... Oh, yeah. He's fuming under that plastered on smile for the crowd. Kate's "well, entertain me," look is not helping.

She wants a show? Then the lady gets a show.

The strings open the song as Eli, tux, white gloves and all, takes the mike.

Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high

He was actually... really good. Kate was impressed, and the song was one of her favorites. She smiled, no she wasn't going to gossip about this with the others.

In fact, she kind of wished that there wasn't the audience there was either. The odd thought took her a bit surprise. Brushing some stray hair out of her face, she gave him a bit of a crooked smile. A silent way of saying 'not bad.' Which was really the best compliment she ever gave anyone.

Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry...

He feels slightly wounded singing that to an audience of Kate. The rest of this group really didn't matter and probably wasn't paying attention.

It was one of those situations where everyone around you seems to vanish. Later on she could almost recall someone coming up and thanking her for her families donations to the museum or the tidbits of conversation that went on around her.

She blinked a couple times - oh god, were those tears? It didn't help that this really was a song she identified closely with. She would not be caught with tears in her eyes in public - or in front of Eli. She wasn't sure which one was worse in that respect.

One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky

Danny...Tommy...Cat...everyone really. He'd hear them. They all thought he should just go up there and ask Kate out. Gay, mutant, mentally a cat - all this should not matter and they think he's got a coward's streak for not just getting it done.

Maybe, but the night and they work they do has to turn to day sometime.

But till that morning
There's a'nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by

And that was the problem. A sea of people, money, color, and class who don't care who saves them from a mugger, but they will care who dates their daughter. They let that come into the nightlife, and who knows what the hell would happen.

Oh crap, there was a tear. She quickly put her hand to her eyes like she was trying to work something out of one of them around makeup, while getting rid of the offending tear drop. She didn't want to leave, but at the same time she wasn't sure she could listen to the rest.

Besides, even if she did go, forcing her way back through the crowd would be more noticeable than just staying put. And she'd have to explain it. 'Oh Kate, why did you turn around and leave during the song?' 'Oh, no reason, just seemed like you were singing right to me and I couldn't really handle it - silly huh?'

Yeah, she wasn't going to pursue that avenue of conversation any time soon. She had to concentrate on holding herself together. Kate hoped Eli didn't notice and then wondered why it bothered her so much that he might.
