Castiel stared blankly as the flames started to lick their way up and across the pyre, beginning the journey that would lead to their victim. The heat danced over his skin, but he felt nothing. He barely even felt Dean’s hand gently close over his bicep and pull him away from the fire, move him to a safe distance where he wouldn’t be burned.
Claire looked peaceful as the fire claimed her. Her hair shone brightly in the last moments, and her face was relaxed as if she were sleeping. Castiel had never felt less at peace in his existence: Claire had been his responsibility, it was his fault that she was dead. Had he not possessed her, not imparted some of his knowledge and power to her, she would not have gone to Kansas City. She would never have gone off alone to meet the devil, and would never have ended up with her own angel blade buried in her belly. He would never have had to hold her in his arms as the life drained from her body; would never have ended up having to burn his… Jimmy’s daughter.
Having Claire had given Castiel a sense of purpose, of belonging, of family. She had become his reason to fight this impossible battle against the devil’s agents. Now he had nothing. Nothing except the aching pain in the very heart of his being that was so, so much worse than the physical pain he had been experiencing recently. This pain was consuming him, preventing him from functioning. It was stopping him from even caring that he didn’t seem capable of operating his vessel properly.
Claire and Dean had been his whole world. Claire was gone, taken by Castiel’s brother while wearing the visage of Dean’s. And now Castiel could see nothing of the fire as it consumed Claire’s empty vessel; all he saw was the cruel malice in the once-gentle eyes that had belonged to Sam Winchester, the mocking pity as Lucifer stood in the middle of the Morning Star Church and took everything from Castiel. Because if Dean had been driven before, he was obsessed now: Lucifer had to die, and if that meant taking Sam with him, then so be it. Dean had hit the books the second they were back, looking for Gabriel or the Colt, and Castiel knew he had already left the funeral and returned there, leaving Cas in this limbo existence with the pain he just wanted to go away.
He could do something about pain, though. Jane had taught him how to deal with pain as a human. And the pills were very easy to take, really.
Yes, pain was something Castiel could do something about.
