I believe he quit. And the one reason I hate him is because he lost weight when he quit I always gain. But it's not really a good reason to hate him just to be jealous.

GDL use to smoke, only gave up about the time they recorded The last radio plays, something to do with being a dad. The photos of him smoking are all from breaks in filming, he never did on the show, but fanfic has him puffing away a bit.

Great story, I could use someone dedicated enough to break me of some habits of mine.

I don't know how I convinced myself I had actually seen him do it then. Perhaps a combination of on-set photos and fanfic.

I'm personally not convinced that Ianto ever did, but the story wanted to be told.
