paul hamm won the all-around gold medal in mens gymnastics with 57.823 points.
kim Dae-eun (south korea) finished second .012 pts behind hamm
yang tae-young (south korea) finished third .049 pts behind hamm.

easy stuff, nothing to it right? well, what if it was discovered that judges messed up. unknowingly deducting a tenth (.1) from yang's parallel bar routine. a tenth that would have put him in first place. .051 points ahead of paul hamm. meaning paul should have been awarded the silver, and kim the bronze. judges gave yang's p-bar routine a start value (the difficulty of a routine) of 9.9. not the 10.0 that was used during the preliminaries and team competition. after reviewing the tape of the all around, federation officials "determined that yang should have been awarded a start value of a 10.0" but because the south koreans failed to lodge a protest during the event, the scoring was not changed. even though however, they did question the score, but were told by judges to wait until after the meet to file a protest letter. three judges were suspended for the mistake, including an american judge. but the score will not be changed. during a news release about the event, the federation said that the rules "do not allow for protests against judges' marks. the judges' marks have to be accepted as a final decision and cannot be changed". a gold that belongs to yang tae-young, now rests in the hands of paul hamm. how much does that take away the glory...and the amazing comeback that wasnt as incredible as everyone thought.
