Alex jerked awake, her eyes widening for a moment before she slipped from the bed, padding to the kitchen to start some coffee. They had work to do later but it wasn't even light outside and she didn't feel like going back to sleep. She flipped on the light and hissed out a curse, her eyes closing automatically, before she forced them open to make them adjust. About an hour later, she'd left the bar, heading for one of the places she liked to practice. It was still dark outside but she needed to do something after that dream. She ignored the headache throbbing behind her eyes as she walked, her pockets full of extra ammunition.
She brushed a hand against her newly cropped her hair, almost smiling at the familiar sensation before she entered the shooting range. It was far enough away that she wasn't likely to wake anyone up and the practice would do her some good. Coming back to the job after five years almost felt like coming home in a way, even though she knew it was supposed to only be temporary. Once the situation was settled, she'd be able to go back to just being a bar owner.
Except the idea didn't appeal to her as much as it should have. She'd missed this life more than she ever would have admitted to anyone. It was something that just settled in your blood and never left. Some of the others were more suited to the quiet life, but she wasn't one of them. She'd tried for five years, living a normal life and while it hadn't been bad, it wasn't quite the perfect fit for her either. Being a Turk had been what she'd been born and raised to do, unlike some of the others.
A quiet sigh and she slipped into her routine, checking her gun before she fired it. The sound seemed louder than it ever had before and she almost recoiled before shaking her head. The headache was probably causing it. She shoved the uncomfortable feeling to the back of her mind and turned back to the task at hand.
