What is Operation WildLife (OWL)?
Before answering that question, I think it's best to know a bit of it's origin.
What is WildLife (the Manga)?
I love manga but I rarely collect them; I either borrow it off someone/somewhere or search it online for freebies. In addition to the strictness of my mom against me reading any manga, needless to say owning them, I have zero reason to purchase and own any. HOWEVER all has changed: WildLife is the very first manga that I, a cheapstake, am willing to take the risk, to ask people favours and to pay money just to get the hardcopy of it. From beginning til now, I own 11 volumes (and will keep collecting). Two words can describe the surface of the manga: Vet + animals; 'nuff said.
What's so special about WildLife?
I'm sure Linda Wu can answer this question without any problems. The rest of you, muwahahahaha.... I donno how you'll ever get to read it especially if you can't understand Chinese. I do know a certain scanlation site has it as a project, since that's how I first came across it. All I can say that besides it being about vets (and that's the main point for me anyway) the characters created by the mangaka is quite unique as one of them already captured the heart of Linda. (Most characters I've seen has captured my heart already).
How did the idea "OWL" came about?
Linda read the manga way before I did and she happened to have read the volumes with the vet that captured her attention. She describe how awesome the manga is (partly cuz that character existed) and urged me to read them. I didn't read it until a whole year later, but upon reading it realized just how awesome that character she like was cuz I fell for him too. :P
So on a warm and peaceful night in Vancouver, two crazy gals had a crazy conversation regarding the manga. As crazy as that one of the gals always has been with her wild fantasies and imaginations, she told her want-to-be-a-vet gal: "You must go to Sask. And find HIM!" (cuz the likelihood of finding a silverish /blond coloured hair guy will be higher in a white society). Sadly the vet gal replied: "but Sask. rejected me. I'm going to China" (Where it's mainly Chinese.... black hair with yellow skin). "Well then," She continued "the chance may be slimmer now but try finding him in China then" As friends of this crazy gal all knows, she has proven to herself before that Gundam's Quatre DO exist... therefore, she believes that the manga Vet character will exist too. Vet gal doubted it but is willing to give it a shot. After all, it won't hurt so why not?
The side quest actually didn't have a name until certain Chapter, in this blog, appeared where I mentioned trying to find this Canadian Senpai and she replied with "...Operation WildLife..."
Now, I actually didn't limit the character to any culture, race, etc but somehow it has been set as "foreigners". (I actually hope for Japanese, since they are the crazy people).
Now we can answer the question:
What is Operation WildLife (OWL)?
Basically, it's a side quest first thought of by Linda Wu for me to do during my time as a veterinary student. The word "Operation" means well, operation. Like Operation Dumbo drop. Simply put, it's just a project, a quest of some sort. The word "WildLife" comes from a manga called WildLife. The objective of this operation is to find that cool vet character appeared in Wildlife that has captured the hearts of Linda and Moi. Of course, I'd like to find other possible Wildlife characters (e.g. the main character who's quite GTO-like personality wise)
What has happened to OWL now?
OWL is in progress. It started when Linda replied with the "....Operation Wildlife..." certain chapters back. Since it's a side quest, I'm not putting much effort in it but just letting chances come by and see what I can get from them.
As of now, in the university I attend, C.A.U, I've picked up at three targets: one in vet and two in animal sciences. All of them master students and apparently all from Canada. I've yet to see them nor contact them and besides their names and the faculties they are in, I know nothing else. Whether they're "WildLife" like characters, that for me isn't as important. I'm just happy to know I ain't the only Canadian in the university.
Again, just letting chances come to me and when there's more news regaring OWL appears, I'll update them here. Those that are interested can keep an eye on the blog or check the Tag: o.w.l
