Good reminder. I get tired of all the promises in modern worship songs. Most of them are things I know I can't keep. It's like the words are big promises to show depth of feeling or the like, but the songs come out sounding like a little child screaming "I love you" at the top of his lungs when he really has no idea what real love means. Volume & repetition do not add depth. Where are the real songs in which people struggle for faith, victory, and a life of difficult choices?
I would have to know some examples, because I do not feel that way about modern music at all
Actually, the post really isn't making a point about music - the point is moreso that we should, as Christians, be able to sing those songs confidently instead of feeling like hypocrites when we do. In other words, that's how we SHOULD be living. The problem is with us, not the music.
Stuff like, "I will give you all my worship, I will give you all my praise." From Amazing Love: "In all I do, I honor you."
I know I don't do this. I don't believe it's even possible except by the Spirit, and I still don't feel comfortable making promises on behalf of God.
You made a good point that we are the imperfect ones. But are the "perfect" songs really relevant in an imperfect world? Anyway, for my own preference I think I will choose not to sing songs that I cannot back up with action. I may have to check out some of the music you're talking about.
Well if I sing "I will give you all my worship", it means that's what I'm trying to do. I wouldn't dare sing it if it weren't in my heart. If I wasn't even trying to give Him all my worship, that's when I personally would stop singing it. But I can confidently promise God that I'll do my best to give Him all my worship, and try my darndest to honor Him in all I do.
Anyhow, I should loan you some cd's, but how many times have I said that and forgotten to bring them. Song lyric: "I will bring Dan some cd's" - interpretation: I will do my best to remember to bring Dan a cd to church next Sunday.
"Where are the real songs in which people struggle for faith, victory, and a life of difficult choices?"
In my cd book at home. Want some? There's a few praise songs that do that too, but our main focus is on the goodness of God when we sing those songs, and I've never sang a promise that I shouldn't keep to God - and if they are promises that I should keep, then I would venture to say that the problem is with me. That was Tozer's point as well.
