Harry Potter gazed at the cottage in front of him. It seemed so strange to see it complete and whole, and not falling apart. Instead of evidence of destruction, it showed unity and completeness. However, he knew this scene would only last for a few more hours.
As he looked at the cottage, he fingered the Time Turner that hung around his neck. It was an experimental Time Turner, one that could take the user back years, instead of only hours. He had volunteered to be the test subject. Initially, the Ministry refused, fearing that he would want to change history. However, after months of modifications, they finally agreed.
“You may use this, Mr. Potter,” they had told him. “However, don’t try to change history. A spell has been placed on the Time Turner. If it detects any attempts to change history, you will automatically be returned to the present time.”
As much as he hated the stipulation, he knew it was necessary. As much as he wanted to change history, to stop Wormtail from betraying his family, he didn’t know how severe the repercussions would be. Would Voldemort still lose his power by attacking Neville, instead? What if Voldemort had continuously gained power until even Dumbledore and the entire might of Wizarding Britain were powerless to stop him? That was a risk Harry couldn’t afford to take.
Still, there was one thing he wanted to do, but feared the Time Turner would prevent. He wanted to meet his parents and thank them for sacrificing themselves to save him. That wouldn’t change the timeline, would it? There was only one way to find out.
Harry started walking up to the cottage, glancing at the sky as he did so. The sun rose steadily in the east. From what he knew of this particular Halloween, Voldemort wouldn’t arrive until evening. That should give him time to do what he wanted to do.
He stopped short of the door, and took a deep breath. He knocked a few times on the door. “Coming!” he could hear from the other side. The door opened to reveal the one woman he had most looked forward to meeting his whole life: his mother, Lily Evans-Potter.
“James, why didn’t...wait a minute, you’re not James! Who are you?” she demanded, brandishing a wand.
Harry didn’t attempt to draw his. “Um, this is hard to explain…”
“And how did you get past the Fidelius Charm?” she snapped, raising her wand even higher.
Harry grinned sheepishly. “Maybe that’s because I’m already protected, Mum.”
Her eyes widened. “What did you call me?”
“Mum. Look at my eyes. I look like Dad, but I have your eyes,” Harry said.
Lily just stood there, staring at him. “Come inside, before anyone sees,” she said urgently, grabbing his arm and escorting him inside. She closed the door behind him and looked at him sternly. “Now, would you mind telling me the truth?”
Harry sighed. “Mum...oh, well, Lily Evans Potter. You’re sister is Petunia Dursley and you’re a Muggleborn witch,” he said.
“Death Eaters would know that. Tell me something that nobody else would know,” she demanded, poking his chest with a finger.
“Severus Snape was the first one to tell you that you were a witch,” Harry replied.
She gathered herself angrily. “How dare you mention...wait, how do you know that? Only Petunia would know that.”
“It’s a long and complicated story, but the fact of the matter is I’m your son, Harry,” he replied.
Lily continued to stare at him for a little while. “You do look like Harry, but you can’t be him. He’s only a year old.”
Harry nodded. “I’m from the future. I came back because I wanted to meet you.”
She was confused. “Meet me? But that would imply...no! Are you saying that I’m dead in the future? What about James?”
“Dad’s dead, too,” Harry said sadly. “I grew up an orphan. I never got the chance to know you.”
Lily began to tremble and Harry feared she would collapse on the floor. He grabbed her arm gently and escorted her to a sofa, easing her down onto it. “But he can’t be. We’re safe! How….when?”
Harry shook his head. “Mum, believe me, I want to tell you, but I can’t. If I try, the Time Turner will send me back to my time. Call it a precaution. But I can tell you this: your efforts to protect me did not go in vain.”
He sat down on the sofa next to her, and took her hand in his. He could see tears falling from her eyes. “Mum, I wanted to meet you, and also to thank you. Your efforts gave me a chance to live, even if my life wasn’t exactly peachy.”
Lily rubbed the tears from her eyes and sniffed. “I’m sorry, Harry. I believe you, but it’s just hard to believe that I won’t get a chance to know you much longer. I won’t have a chance to see you grow up, go to Hogwarts, get married, and have children of your own.”
Harry smiled gently. “I know, I know.” He looked around the living room and frowned. “Where’s Dad?”
“Oh, he had to go on some errand. Sirius and Remus...you do know them, right?” Harry nodded. “Well, they came by to collect him. We’re supposed to be in hiding, under the protection of the Fidelius Charm. Speaking of which, how did you get past the wards?”
He shrugged. “The only thing I can think of is the fact that I’m already here, well, my younger self, and the fact I knew what would happen later on in this house. And no, as I said, I can’t say any more. I guess the fact that the Time Turner hasn’t activated means that I haven’t changed history too much.”
Lily giggled. “That’s your father, alright. He’s always looking for the loopholes in rules and laws.” She looked at him sternly. “I hope you didn’t inherit his troublemaking ways from him.”
Harry smiled sheepishly. “Well, I did get into my fair share of trouble, but only because it was necessary.”
She snorted. “That’s what your father always claimed.”
“I’m serious. I never really did have a knack for pranks, although I’d be lying if I said I didn’t pull one or two every now and then,” he replied.
She sighed. “I guess he’s had too much of an influence on you. If you want to wait for him, he might be back in a couple of hours.”
Harry grimaced. “I don’t have much time. There’s something about this day...no, I can’t explain, so please don’t ask me,” he said, holding up his hand to forestall any interruption. “I just wanted to meet you and to thank you.”
Lily smiled. “You’re a sweet young man, Harry. I do have a question: what did you mean by my efforts to protect you? Are you saying…?” she asked, her voice trailing off as her eyes widened in horror.
He hesitated before nodding. “Yes. I don’t know how you were successful, whether it was some complex spell or the simple fact that you were only trying to protect me, your only son.”
Lily grimaced. “I have done some research. I started when I learned I was going to have you, because I knew there might be a chance that Voldemort might come after you someday. I only hoped that I would never have to put it to the test.”
Harry saw tears falling from her eyes again. He took his wand and conjured up a handkerchief and handed it to her. She sniffed, took it and wiped her eyes again. He hesitated and leaned forward to kiss her cheek. Only, it wasn’t her cheek that he ended up kissing. It was her mouth.
Their eyes widened in surprise and their first instinct was to pull away immediately. They broke the kiss and gazed at each other, but they didn’t say a word. Instead, Lily placed a hand tenderly on his cheek and whispered, “Harry.”
He leaned forward and kissed her again, this time with a little more force. She didn’t push him away. Instead, she melted into the kiss, closing her eyes. She placed a hand on his shoulder, not to push him away, but to bring him closer to her.
“Mum,” he said.
“Lily.”
“What?”
“If we’re going to do this, Harry, call me Lily,” she said firmly.
“Yes, Mu...I mean, Lily,” he replied, kissing her again.
They continued to snog for what seemed like hours. Their hands roamed over each other’s bodies, trying to reach bare skin. Finally, she broke free from the kiss and sat up, forcing him a little further away from her. “Follow me,” she ordered. She stood up and took his hand and led him out of the living room.
They walked down the hall, stopping every so often to kiss. Everytime they did, a piece of clothing dropped to the floor. First, her blouse, then his shirt. A minute later, her skirt and their shoes and socks followed. Finally, they were clad only in their underwear. Mother and son looked at each other, their faces red.
Lily reached behind her to take off her bra, but Harry placed a hand on her. “Please, let me.”
She nodded and stood still as Harry unhooked her bra and let it drop to the floor. He looked at her and smiled. “Mum, you’re so beautiful.”
She smiled in response and kissed him again. She led him to the bedroom, reaching to open the door. Harry made a move to close the door, but she stopped him. “I need it open, just in case…”
“Just in case Dad comes home?”
“No, just in case, um, you cry.”
Harry couldn’t help but chuckle. As they made their way to the bed, the last vestiges of clothing vanished from their bodies. He laid her gently on the bed and positioned himself on top of her.
“Let me thank you, Mum,” he said, kissing her.
She nodded. “Go ahead, Harry.”
He entered her, fully enjoying her warmth. She gasped as she felt his cock. “Harry, you feel so good,” she moaned.
“So do you, Mum.”
Then they moved together. Their pace was slow and gentle. Harry knew Ginny liked their lovemaking to be fast and passionate, but Lily seemed to prefer her lovemaking slow and gentle. He yearned to love his Mum like he loved his girlfriend, but he would not doing anything to make Lily uncomfortable.
The bed shifted a little as they continued their illicit union. Lily’s cries filled the air as Harry continued to love her. He relished the feel of her skin against his. He loved how they held hands and how her legs were wrapped around him.
“Mu...Lily, I love you so...fucking...much,” he moaned.
“Language, Harry. Please,” she begged. “Oh, God, I love you so much, Harry.”
They continued making love until they reached their climaxes. “Harry!” she cried out and Harry emptied himself into her.
Harry rolled off of her and laid at her said. “Thank you, Mum.”
Lily smiled and caressed his cheek. “No, Harry, thank you.” She kissed him passionately again.
Minutes later, Harry was almost fully dressed. Lily had a towel wrapped around her. “Are you sure you have to go?” she asked.
“Yes, Mum. The Time Turner will only allow me to be here for a certain amount of time,” he lied. Actually, he wanted to make sure he was fully dressed before returning to the present.
Lily nodded. She walked over to her bedside table and took out a small box. She then tugged on some of her hair and placed them in the box. Harry looked puzzled. “For something to remember me by, just in case.”
Harry realized the implications and nodded. He gave her one last, goodbye kiss and then pulled the Time Turner from underneath his robes. He pressed a button and a bright light filled the room. A second later, he was gone.
He returned to the Ministry almost a split second after he had left. The Unspeakables rushed over to him and he handed them the Time Turner. They prodded him with questions. “Everything went fine. No, I didn’t try to change the timeline,” he replied. They looked at him skeptically, but seemed to accept his answer.
As he returned home, he took out the box his Mum had given him and examined it. He smiled as he remembered what she had placed inside. Yes, they would be something to remember her by, and he would find a good use for them.
