This post won't make any sense to anyone who's not familiar with the tv show Lie to Me. Just so you know.
I've recently been watching this series (am at 1x08 now) and I really like it so far. It's got ups and downs, and I think they introduced the characters' backstories too quickly (in 1x05, 1x06 and 1x07 there were several each while before, there were none) but other than that I've been satisfied. I wonder how true it all is. Whether you can really read people like that. I think it's possible, but I wonder if I can do that, too. Maybe I'll try to watch it...
Anyway, not what I wanted to say.
I love how they're portraying Gillian and her husband. He's introduced fairly at the beginning and we see them together, and slowly we're learning that not all is right with her husband, that he's got some kind of secret. Of course, adultery is the first thing that would spring to most people's minds, but they never actually confirmed it till 1x07. Cal Lighthart knows, Ria Torres knows, and Gillian knows too, somewhere inside. But we never actually see anything until this 1x07, and then just at the ending. It's very subtle and yet not subtle at all.
I also like how they incorporate the character's back stories... Like Torres and her strong reaction to the gang guy in 1x05... and Cal deducing she'd been abused. And no real, clear talk about it, nothing but hints and vagueness... but I could see it happening like that.
And with Gillian and her adopted girl who she lost... saying it to someone involved in the case. And Cal obviously knew, but WHAT actually was Gillian's relation with adoption we never knew until she outright said it.
And Cal and his friend Jeffrey... We never even knew Cal's mother had died until he almost casually dropped it into conversation... and Gillian knew. This backstory didn't have a red flag to it, no 'Oh, look, background introduced!' It was subtle, and I liked that.
