So I should really not be up anymore - I gotta work from 9 to 5 tomorrow (and yes, I have that song stuck in my head too), but I really wanted to watch this episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Papa's Got a Brand New Car.
Don't know if anyone who read this is familiar with the show, but I ain't gonna explain it.
I just watched the episode where Will's father comes back after 14 years of absence , makes a promise to take Will on a trip and then abandons Will all over again. Man, what a powerful ending. I 've watched it several times now, but still tears come to my eyes. The episode really shows the scars parental abandonment can cause - in a way that makes people actually think about what's going on. I've noticed that FPoBA has a remarkable ability for that - it's a comedy show, but it has some kind of message. Sometimes, though, the message feels a bit forced.
This one not, though. This one was real, powerful and emotional. And it really shows how good an actor Will Smith is, as well as James Avery, who plays Uncle Phil. Phil has been way more of a father to Will than his real one has ever been, including all the ups and downs.
I'm never gonna abandon my kids.
