Shadows

While young, we stood straight and tall, with a bright and blinding sun directly overhead. We moved in whatever direction we chose, for we cast no shadow.
As we aged, the sun shone ahead of us, and we cast a shadow long and wide. Now our shadow covers the ones we love, our family, our children, our friends and sometimes those we know only momentarily. We move ahead slowly, with purpose. Our shadow touches many. As the hours quickly fade in my 47th year on this planet, and the 48th year draws near, I realize how far my shadow stretches. Such is the plight of man: to see in our later years what we might have seen so very long ago had the sun been less blinding. Still, our place in the universe is not unique. Many others have traveled the road we now follow. And peace is our companion, for we cannot go back
