That weekend thang

Still sick, but it's my own damn fault for going out with friends on Friday night. I paid for it -- was horribly sick all day Saturday -- a Mucas Making Machine, as it were. I'm much better today, though I realize that it will probably be a few more days now before I'm 100%. I'm still hacking and sneezing and blowing my nose too often for my taste, but at least it's not constant and I have a bit of energy.

So much energy, in fact, that I wrote today -- finished off chapter 13 and wrote what might become the epilogue of the book -- about 2500 words. Because my symptoms were so bad I couldn't sleep last night, and I ended up thinking a lot about the novel, which didn't help me sleep at all. I came up with a conversation for the two brothers to have that I didn't include in today's writing. I'm still thinking about it, and when I get around to typing up the chapter I'll decide whether to add in that conversation topic as well.

In regards to the epilogue -- I'm not sure that I'll actually use it. I wrote it up because it was in my head and I needed to get it out of my head. But it might be too much, too telling, not showing. We'll see how I feel when I actually get to the end of the novel.

As for the next chapter, earlier this week when I was feeling better I figured out some of the "how". This character is going crazy and she doesn't realize it. It took a while for me to figure out how to show this from her POV that wasn't a cliche. I think I got it. We'll see when I actually start to write this chapter, which I'm hoping I'll be able to do tomorrow night.

Last night I was watching "Waterworld". I am perversely fond of this movie. Yes, it has plot holes you can drive a whale through. But I like some of the world building that they did, and I like Kevin Costner's take on "Stoic". But it did make me think a bit more about my novel, and to come up with a new mantra -- my novel has to be more logical than Waterworld. Probably not much of a stretch, but there are things about the history of this world that I really need to get settled in my head, as well as more of the mechanics of the magic system, so that they'll make sense. More than Waterworld.

I hope that everyone's had a marvelous weekend!
